Box Score The Webster University men's soccer season came to an abrupt end as Fontbonne University scored a goal with 4:47 remaining in the second overtime, handing the Gorloks a 1-0 loss in the SLIAC Tournament semi-final, on November 6, at the Soccer Park. The loss ended Webster's hopes of a second NCAA III Tournament appearance in three years.
The teams had gone 105 minutes and 13 seconds with minimal scoring chances on both sides. Heading into the second overtime session, both Webster and Fontbonne had combined for 21 shots total and just seven shots on goal. But Fontbonne's Ryan Dudley sped through the Webster defense to settle a loose ball and fired a rocket from 15 yards out for the game winner.
The goal ended a 564-minute scoreless streak by Webster goalie Ian McReynolds (SR, Florissant, McCluer North HS), who ended the season 6-5-2, with five shutouts and a 1.28 goals against average.
Webster entered the tournament with high hopes after completing an 8-0-1 conference record, and winning or sharing the regular season title for a third straight season. The Gorlok defense was outstanding, especially in SLIAC conference play, allowing only two goals in its last nine games vs. SLIAC opponents, in 845 minutes of play.
The Gorloks had a 7-2 shot advantage after a scoreless first half, but by game's end the two teams stood statisticallly even. Webster was ahead 13-9 in shots and 4-3 in corners, and the Griffins had committed just two more fouls than the Gorloks, at 15-13. It was apparent one team was going to need a break to end the deadlock, if the game was not going to end up being decided in PKs.
Daniel Tovar (JR, Chicago, IL/St. Charles HS) and Jacob Stieb (SR, Highland, IL/Highland HS) were named to the 2014 SLIAC Men's Soccer All-Tournament Team.
Webster had beaten Fontbonne, 1-0, in its last contest, on November 1 at the Soccer Park in its regular season final. The Gorloks wind up 10-9-2 overall on the season.
Fontbonne, the #4 seed, advances to the championship game at Westminster College, on November 8. Westminster, the #2 seed, defeated Spalding University, 4-0, to advance and with Webster's elimination, will host in Fulton, MO.
