Softball Splits First Four in Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 The Webster University softball team came through its first two days in Florida, despite delays and last minute schedule changes, even Steven, as it split four games versus four different opponents.  The Gorloks are 2-2 after defeating Marywood University (PA) and the University of Northwestern (MN), and losing to St. Mary's University (MN) and Ohio Northern University.

On March 7, Webster opened up against St. Mary's, a member of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and lost 13-2 in five innings.  The Cardinals had nine games under their belt coming into the contest and the difference in game experience showed.

The Gorloks came back in the nightcap, literally, starting play at 10:00 p.m., and defeated Marywood University, 14-3 in six innings.  The Pacers are members of the Colonial States Athletic Conference.  It was a good win for Webster in that Marywood had plenty of playing experience in hand also, having seven games under its belt, before it met the Gorloks.  The Gorloks ripped 21 hits, including four doubles and four triples against Marywood.

Rachel Franck (SO, St. Louis, MO/McCluer North HS) was 4-5, with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.  Samantha Powers (SR, Manchester, MO/John F Kennedy HS) was 3-4, with 4 RBIs, and Kelley Bridgmon (SR, Imperial, MO/Seckman HS) was 3-4, with 2 RBIS, 2 2Bs, and 2 runs scored.  Eight of the Gorloks' nine starters had two or more hits.  Powers went 6 innings on the mound, picking up the complete game win, allowing six hits and one earned run.

The following day, March 8, brought another split as Webster lost a 9:00 a.m. contest, after the late night the evening before, to Ohio Northern University, 12-1, in five innings.  The Polar Bears, 7-5 on the season, are members of the Ohio Athletic Conference.

The Gorloks came back strong in the afternoon, beating the University of Northwestern (MN), 9-1.  The Eagles are members of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference.

Boxscores for the Northwestern game, a win, is not available.

Erin McGinnis (SO, Fenton, MO/Rockwood Summit HS) has had a particularly strong start to the season.  McGinnis has five stolen bases in four games, is batting .700, and has made only three outs total in her plate appearances in those four games.  She also threw a runner out at home plate from her center field position.

On March 9, Webster has another double dip.  It faces Lakeland College (WI), a member of the Northern Athletic Conference located in Milwaukee, at 1:00 p.m. EDT.  The Muskies have a 1-3 record so far this spring.  At 3:00 p.m. EDT the Gorloks take on Becker College (MA).  The Hawks are members of the New England Collegiate Conference and will be playing their first contests of the season.
