Box Score 2 The Webster University softball team had a split, albeit an important one, with Westminster College, on April 17 at Blackburn Park. The Gorloks won game one, 2-0, behind a combined shutout by Samantha Powers and Rachel Franck, before falling 4-0 in the nightcap.
Webster and Westminster are battling for the fourth spot in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament and the split left Webster at 7-6 with five games remaining and Westminster at 9-7, with just two SLIAC games left. By having one less loss than the Blue Jays, the Gorloks control their own fate in the final stretch.
Powers (SR, Manchester, MO/John F. Kennedy HS) started and went five innings, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out three. She evened her season record at 6-6 with the victory. Franck (SO, Florissant, MO/McCluer North HS) took over in the sixth, giving up a hit and a walk, and striking out three. She earned the Gorloks first save of the season.
Taylor Gibbs (JR, Alton, IL/Alton HS) was on base three times, going 1-1 with an RBI, a walk, and reaching on a hit by pitch. Catcher Molly Muntz (SR, Streator, IL/Streator HS) was 1-2 with a run scored and a walk. Erin McGinnis (SO, Fenton, MO/Rockwood Summit HS) was 1-3 with a run scored and a stolen base. Kelley Bridgmon (SR, Imperial, MO/Seckman HS) was 1-3 with an RBI and a stolen base.
In game two, the Gorloks could only manage five hits as they were shutout. Freshman Alexis Spriggs (Scott City, MO/Scott City HS) got the start and went the distance, giving up nine hits, three walks, and four runs. The Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead in the first, added one in the sixth, and a pair of insurance runs in the seventh.
Alyssa Sapp (SO, Ashland, MO/Southern Boone HS), who joined the team just two weeks earlier, was 2-3. Muntz was 1-3 and McGinnis was 0-2 with a walk and a stolen base.
Webster is 11-14 overall on the season. The Gorloks host Spalding University (KY) on April 19 for a doubleheader at Blackburn Park. It is Webster's final home date and will be senior day with the Gorloks five seniors being honored.
