Box Score 2 The Webster University softball team dropped a doubleheader to Spalding University, 6-2 and 10-8, on April 19 at Blackburn Park. The Gorloks honored their five seniors with a ceremony before the first game. Unfortunately for Webster, the losses eliminated them from contention for a spot in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.
Westminster College won a doubleheader at MacMurray College to finish at 11-7 in the SLIAC. The Gorloks are 7-8 with three games remaining in conference, making their best possible finish 10-8.
Despite the losses, there were a number of exciting moments on the afternoon. In game one, after Webster had fallen behind 2-0 in the top of the second, Samantha Powers (SR, Manchester, MO/John F. Kennedy HS), who had played in 95 games without doing so before, hit her first home run, a shot over the center field fence, to tie the game at 2-2.
The Golden Eagles scored three runs in the sixth to pull out in front, 5-2, and added a final insurance run in the seventh. Powers started the game on the mound, and went 6 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits, six walks, and six runs. She took the loss and fell to 6-7 on the season.
At the plate, Powers was 1-3, with the home run, and two RBIs. Rachel Franck (SO, Florissant, MO/McCluer North HS) was 1-3 with a stolen base.
In game two, Spalding grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the first off starter Alexis Spriggs (FR, Scott City, MO/Scott City HS). Webster scored one in the bottom of the first, but ran amok in a seven-run second inning to take an 8-3 lead.
Kelley Bridgmon (SR, Imperial, MO/Seckman HS), Powers, Kristin McIntyre (FR, Eureka, MO/Eureka HS), Franck, Alyssa Sapp (SO, Ashland, MO/Southern Boone HS), Molly Muntz (SR, Streator, IL/Streator HS), and Erin McGinnis (SO, Fenton, MO/Rockwood Summit HS) all singled in a row. All seven wound up scoring. Powers, Franck, Sapp, Muntz, and McGinnis all had RBIs, and Bridgmon, Sapp, and McGinnis all had stolen bases in the rally.
But the Golden Eagles came back with six runs in the top of the third, capped by a grand slam, to take the lead back, 9-8. They added an insurance run in the seventh for the 10-8 final.
Spriggs went 3 2/3, gave up seven hits, five walks, and nine runs. She struck out three as she saw her record fall to 1-3. Kallie Federhofer (JR, St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South HS) pitched the final 3 1/3 innings, giving up four hits and a walk, and just one run.
Franck was 2-4, with two runs, an RBI, and a stolen base. Sapp was 3-4, with two RBIs, two stolen bases, and a run scored. McGinnis was 2-3, with two stolen bases, an RBI, a walk, and a run. McIntyre was 2-3 with a run scored.
Before game one, Bridgmon, Taylor Gibbs (JR, Alton, IL/Alton HS), Jessica Lewandowski (St. Louis, MO/Mehlville HS), Muntz, and Powers were all honored for playing their final home games for the Gorloks. Gibbs will be graduating after just three years at Webster.
