Softball Drops DH to Rose-Hulman to Close 2014

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Webster University softball team ended its 2014 season with a pair of one-run losses, 4-3 and 6-5, at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, in Terre Haute, IN, on April 24.   The Gorloks said goodbye to five seniors as the team closed a tough 13-19 campaign.

Webster took a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning in game one on five hits, including a three-run homer by sophomore Erin McGinnis (Fenton, MO/Rockwood Summit HS).  But the Gorloks would only have three more hits the rest of the way as the Fighting Engineers came back to win.

After singles by Rachel Franck (SO, McCluer North HS) and senior Molly Muntz (Streator, IL/Streator HS), McGinnis went deep for the first time this season.  McGinnis wound up 1-3, with the home run and three RBIs and senior Kelley Bridgmon (Imperial, MO/Seckman HS) was 2-3, with a double.

Senior Samantha Powers (Manchester, MO/John F. Kennedy HS) started her final game for the Gorloks, pitching six innings and allowing six hits and three earned runs.  She wound up 7-8 on the year.

In game two, Webster once again grabbed a quick lead with two in the first.  After Franck reached on an error, Muntz doubled her home and wound up scoring also on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.  Rose-Hulman picked up one of the runs in the bottom of the first and added four more in the third to take a 5-2 lead.

The Gorloks cut the lead to 5-3 when Powers hit a solo home run, her second in a week and the second in her four year career, in the fourth.  Webster added another run in the sixth on a Bridgmon double and Powers single to make it 5-4.  A single by Muntz in the seventh, followed by a McGinnis double, tied it up at 5-5.

In the bottom of the seventh Rose-Hulman reached reliever Kallie Federhofer (JR, St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South HS) for a one-out single.  A double brought home the winning run for the Engineers for the 6-5 final.

Federhofer had taken over in the fourth and had retired all 10 batters faced until allowing the game winning hits.  She pitched 3 1/3 innings, giving up just the two hits and one run, and striking out three in taking the loss.

Freshman Alexis Spriggs (Scott City, MO/Scott City HS) started the contest and went three innings, giving up seven hits, two walks, and four earned runs.

Powers was 3-3, with a home run, two RBIs, and a run scored.  Muntz was 2-4, with a double, RBI, and two runs scored.

Bridgmon, Muntz, Powers, Jessica Lewandowski (SR, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville HS), and Taylor Gibbs (JR, Alton, IL/Alton HS) all played their final games for Webster.  Gibbs is graduating early, after playing three seasons for the Gorloks.  Gibbs winds up fifth on the Webster career home run list with 19, and 16th in RBIs with 74.
