Led by Chelsea Holman's 17 points and five three-pointers, the Webster University women's basketball team picked up an impressive road win, 56-50, at Augustana College, at Rock Island, IL on November 28. The Gorloks took an early lead in the first period, took control of the contest with a 10-2 second period effort, and held on in the fourth for the win.
Gorloks led, 16-13, after the first period. The Vikings grabbed a 7-2 lead before Webster outscored them 14-6 for the remainder of the period. The Gorloks were in complete control in the second period, outscoring the Vikings 10-2 and taking a 26-15 halftime lead.
Augustana chipped away slightly at Webster's lead, a 13-11 edge in the third period closing them within nine at 37-28. The Vikings opened the fourth period with a 13-4 run to cut the Gorloks' lead to 43-41 with 4:25 left in the game. A pair of Aley Lucas (SO, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan HS) free throws and Holman's (JR, Dechard, TN/Franklin County HS) fifth three-pointer of the game increased the Gorlok lead to six, 48-42, with 2:35 remaining.
The Vikings closed to within two, but a Holman jumper put the Gorloks up by four, 50-46, with 1:43 on the clock. A pair of Viking free throws made it a two-point lead but Kelsey Miller (SO, Elizabeth, IN/South Central HS) hit a pair of free throws for Webster to make it a four point game again. Augustana would cut it to two at 0:57 but Webster hit its free throws in the final seconds to seal the victory. Miller made another pair, and Kennedy Hartman (JR, Sidney, IL/Unity HS) and Aley Lucas each sank one for the 56-50 final.
Newcomers to the team this year, Holman and Miller led the team with 17 and 14 points, respectively. Holman was 5-7 from the three-point line and 6-9 (67%) overall from the field. Holman also had a team-high seven rebounds. Hartman, also a newcomer to the squad, had six points and six rebounds to go along with a team-high four assists.
Webster improved to 2-1 on the season. Augustana, a member of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, fresh off a two-game trip to California, fell to 3-2. The Gorloks begin play in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference as they travel to Greenville College (IL) on December 2.
