The Webster University women's basketball team picked up its first win in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 73-57 victory at Principia College, in Elsah, IL, on December 5. The Gorloks, who had a one-point halftime lead, overpowered the Panthers in the second half to secure the win.
Webster led 32-31 at the half, but used a 20-10 third period to extend its lead to 52-41. The Panthers tried to chip away at the Gorlok lead in the fourth period, but everytime Principia cut the lead to single digits, Webster responded with a basket of its own.
After a cold shooting night in a loss at Greenville, the Gorloks rebounded well at Principia, shooting 28-59 (48.7%) from the field. Webster got 49 points from it's bench as the reserves outscored the starters, 49-24. Leading the way off the bench for the Gorloks was Ashley Brooks (SR, Hermann, MO/Hermann HS), who had 15 points and added three rebounds and two assists and steals. Brooks has been dealing with an ankle injury, suffered at the Cavallo Tip-Off.
Brittany Harris-Conway (SR, St. James, MO/John F. Hodge HS) had 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Kelsey Miller (SO, Elizabeth, IN/South Central HS) had nine ponts and three assists, and Paige Buechele (JR, Lebanon, IL/Lebanon HS) had a team-high seven assists and three steals.
Webster is 3-2 overall on the season as Principia falls to 0-5. Webster had a 12-game win streak vs. Principia snapped at Grant Gym in the two teams' last meeting on February 3, 2015.
Webster continues their battle of Big Bend at Washington University, on December 9. The Gorloks have 10 days off before heading to Ft. Lauderdale, FL, for the Trip Sports Classic where they will take on Piedmont College (GA) and Loras College (IA).
