Gorloks Double Up Red Devils, 10-2 & 8-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Webster University softball team got a complete effort in sweeping a doubleheader from Eureka College, 10-2 and 8-0, on April 18 at Blackburn Park.  The Gorlok offense muscled up and the defense got two complete game pitching outings, from Alexis Spriggs and Chelsea Thornley.

The Red Devils scored two runs off Spriggs (SO, Scott City, MO/Scott City HS) in the first inning of game one, and after that it was all Gorloks for the remainder of the afternoon.  In Webster's half of the first, Erin McGinnis (JR, Fenton, MO/Rockwood Summit HS) walked and with two out, Kaylyn DeCock (JR, Bettendorf, IA/Bettendorf HS) crushed a home run to dead center field to tie it up, 2-2.  The Gorlok offense was just getting warmed up.

In the third inning, Katlyn Garza (FR, O'Fallon, MO/Ft. Zumwalt North HS) singled to score DeCock, who had singled and advanced to second on a Kaitlin Kinne (JR, Paducah, KY/Heath HS) single, and Webster led, 3-2.  The Gorloks added another run in the fourth when Alyssa Sapp (JR, Ashland, MO/Southern Boone HS) had a bunt single, stole second, and scored on a Laura Zeegers (JR, Oviedo, FL/Leon HS) single.

Webster 10-runned Eureka with a six-run sixth.  McGinnis singled, and after a Sapp sacrific bunt, Zeegers bombed a two-run homer over the fence in left center.  DeCock singled, her fourth hit in the game, and back to back singles by Kinne and Garza scored DeCock.  Alison Stabenow (JR, Granite City, IL/Granite City HS) walked to load the bases and Emily Kolisch (SO, St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) walked to drive in Kinne.  McGinnis' second hit of the inning, a double, scored Garza and Stabenow, giving Webster a 102 lead and ending the game.

The Gorloks would wind up with 16 hits, including the two home runs, in the game.  DeCock was 4-4, with a home run and two RBIs, and Zeegers was 2-4, with a home run and two RBIs.  McGinnis was 2-4, had two RBIs, a double, walk, and two runs, and Garza was 2-4 with two RBIs.

Spriggs threw all six innings, giving up six hits, two runs, walked three, and struck out four.  She improved to 4-5 with the win.

Chelsea Thornley (FR, Clinton, MO/Clinton HS) made her first start for Webster a memorable one.  Thornley had a five inning complete game shutout, scattered three hits, walked none, and struck out one.  She is 1-0 on the season with the win.  Thornley had plenty of offensive support.

McGinnis, who was 5-7 for the day, singled to lead off the Webster first. Sapp had a bunt single and Zeegers was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  DeCock drove home McGinnis with a ground out to short.

Webster added five more in the second, Thornley helped herself with a double and took third on a passed ball.  A Kolisch infield ground out brought her home.  McGinnis singled, Sapp laid down another bunt single, and Zeegers walked.  DeCock doubled to score two and Tessa Johanning (FR, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan HS) singled in DeCock and Zeegers to make it 6-0.

In the third Thornley was hit by a pitch and Kolisch doubled.  McGinnis singled in Thornley and Kolisch would score on a DeCock sac fly to give Webster an 8-0.  After Thornley set down the Red Devils the next two innings, the Gorloks won on the eight-run rule.

DeCock, who was 5-6 on the afternoon, with a double, homer, and six RBIs, was 1-2 with a double and four RBIs.  McGinnis was 3-3, with two runs, a stolen base, and an RBI, and Kolisch was 1-2 with an RBI, double, and run scored.  Sapp was 2-3 with a run scored and Thornley was 1-2, with two runs scored and a double.

Webster finished 8-10 in the SLIAC and is 10-21 overall.  These were the final scheduled home games for the Gorloks in 2015.  It was an unusual end to the home schedule, with no seniors on the squad to be feted.  Webster will be right back in action on April 19 with a doubleheader at Washington University in Clayton.
