Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The Webster University softball team ended its season with a doubleheader loss at Rose-Hulman Institute, 3-12 and 13-14 (8 inn), in Terre Haute, IN. While the season wasn't successful in terms of wins and losses, the Gorloks have numerous reasons to look forward to 2016.
A lot of offense is one thing the Gorloks have to look forward to next year, and the 13 runs scored in game two gave a hint at the type of production the team will be hoping for in 2016.
Webster was down, 9-8, heading into the seventh inning. Kristin McIntyre (SO, Eureka, MO/Eureka HS) led off with a walk and Emily Kolisch (SO, St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) reached on a fielder's choice. Erin McGinnis (JR, Fenton, MO/Rockwood Summit HS) reached on error to load the bases.
Alyssa Sapp (JR, Ashland, MO/Southern Boone HS) grounded into force at home, but Laura Zeegers (JR, Oviedo, FL/Leon HS), who was 4-4 already in the game, doubled to right center giving Webster an 11-9 lead. Kaylyn DeCock (JR, Betterndorf, IA/Bettendorf HS) homered to give Webster a 13-9 lead and giving her six RBIs in the contest.
Paige Prather (JR, Evansville, IN/Central HS), who had relieved in the fourth, struck out the first Engineer batter in the seventh, but gave up three straight singles and a home run as Rose-Hulman tied it up at 13-13. Chelsea Thornley (FR, Clinton, MO/Clinton HS) relieved and retired both batters she faced to send the game into extra innings.
Webster could not score its placed runner at second in its half of the eighth, while Rose-Hulman sacrificed its runner to third and scored on a single to win, 14-13. Thornley would take the loss and, with limited mound appearances due to injury, wound up 1-1 on the season.
The Gorloks had a four-run third to take a 4-1 lead early in the contest. Zeegers singled in Kolisch, and DeCock singled in Sapp and McGinnis. Katlyn Garza (FR, O'Fallon, MO/Ft. Zumwalt North HS) singled in Zeegers to make it 4-1. The Engineers scored two off Gorlok starter Alexis Spriggs (SO, Scott City, MO/Scott City HS) in their half of the third to cut the lead to 4-3.
The Gorloks scored two more in the fourth. A DeCock sac fly scored McGinnis and a Tessa Johanning (FR, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan HS) single scored Zeegers to put Webster up, 6-3. Rose-Hulman came right back to score three in the fifth off Prather, including two home runs, to tie the game at 6-6.
Zeegers would single with Sapp scoring on an E9 in the sixth, and DeCock doubled Zeegers in to give Webster an 8-6 lead. Rose-Hulman kept the scoring fest going with three more in the bottom half to take a 9-8 lead before the Gorlok heroics in the seventh.
Zeegers was 5-5, with four RBIs, four runs and a double. DeCock was 3-4 with six RBIs, a home run and a double, and Sapp was 2-4 with three runs. The Gorloks had 16 hits in the game and were flawless in the field. The Webster defense tightened up in the season's second half as it made only 13 errors in its final 15 games after making 50 in its first 18.
In the 12-3 loss in game one, the Gorloks had a 2-0 lead in the second inning, but the Engineers touched starter Johanning for five runs in their half of the second, including a grand slam.
Webster scored a run in the third to make it 5-3, but Rose-Hulman added two more in their half to extend its lead to 7-3. Chloe Costa (FR, Frisco, TX/Frisco HS) relieved Johanning in the fourth but the Engineers greeted her with three runs to take a 10-3 lead. A two-run homer by the Engineers to lead off the sixth ended the game at 12-3.
DeCock was 1-3, with an RBI and run scored. McGinnis was 1-3 with a walk and run scored, and Kaitlin Kinne (JR, Paducah, KY/Heath HS) was 1-3 with a double.
Webster does not lose any players to graduation and was able to give a number of freshmen significant playing experiences on the season. Transfer catcher DeCock, who batted .425, with three home runs and 34 RBIs will return, as well as fellow junior Erin McGinnis (Fenton, MO/Rockwood Summit HS).
Despite limited playing time due to injuries, McGinnis batted .383 for the Gorloks. Junior Alyssa Sapp (Ashland, MO/Southern Boone HS), a catalyst for the Webster offense, will be back also. Sapp batted .381, scored 37 runs and stole eight bases. Zeegers, who finished at .340, with two home runs, 33 RBIs, and 30 runs, will return for the Gorloks.
All five Webster pitchers will return as well with three of the five being freshmen. Thornley had a 2.62 earned run average, and Prather was 4-1 and Spriggs was 4-5 for the Gorloks.
