Box Score The Webster University men's soccer team grabbed its first win of 2015, with freshman Corey Redington scoring a game-tying goal in regulation and the game-winning goal in overtime. The Gorloks defeated the University of the Ozarks (AR), 2-1, at the Soccer Park on September 12.
Redington (FR, Dardenne Prairie, MO/Ft. Zumwalt West HS) had a shot go wide with 2:30 remaining in regulation, with Webster trailing 1-0. But Redington settled a loose ball just outside the goal box and punched it into the Eagle net with 53 seconds left to tie the game at 1-1 and send it into overtime.
After Webster goalie Zach Horn (JR, Godfrey, IL/Alton Marquette HS) came up with a game-saving stop five minutes into overtime, Redington was once again the man on the spot. A Joey Florian (JR, Ballwin, MO/John F. Kennedy HS) free kick hit the Eagles' cross bar, landed just in front of the goal line, and Redington punched it in for the game winner.
Redington became the second straight freshman for the Gorloks to score a pair of goals in a game as Zach Gyuricza (FR, Chicago, IL/St. Viator HS) scored both goals in a tough 3-2 OT loss to Lake Forest College the evening before.
A misplay by the Webster defense led to Ozarks taking a 1-0 lead early. A Gorlok defender deflected a clearing kick off a teammate right to an Eagle forward, who kicked it by Webster Horn at the 33:00 mark in the first half.
Freshman Eric Tate (St. Louis, MO/Oakville HS) saved a second Eagle goal when a loose ball in front of the Webster goal was shot into a wide open side of the net, only to be blocked by a diving Tate. Minutes later, Horn deflected a point blank shot by the Eagles over the top of the net, saving another goal.
In the second half, the Gorloks kept constant pressure on, having numerous scoring chances as they outshot the Eagles, 14-4. Brendan Shields (JR, St. Peters, MO/Ft. Zumwalt East HS) dribbled in between defenders and got off a shot that was deflected wide by the Eagle goalkeeper with 25 minutes left.
Minutes later, Gyuricza got off a shot in the box that was just deflected wide by the Ozark keeper as well. Florian added another scoring chance, hitting the right goalpost with a shot with 16 minutes left in the second half.
The Gorloks domination in the second half was reflected in their 14-4 shot advantage and a 7-1 edge over the Eagles in corner kicks. Reddington's game-tying goal was the topper, setting up the overtime session.
Horn picked up his first win of the season in the nets, and is 1-3 on the young season. Webster is 1-4 after getting in the plus column. The University of the Ozarks, a member of the American Southwest Conference, falls to 1-2-2 with a second straight loss to a SLIAC opponent. The Eagles were 10-8-2 in 2014.
Webster has a week off before hosting Augustana College (IL) on September 19 and Simpson College (IA) on September 20 at the Soccer Park.
