The Webster University women's basketball team lost at Spalding University, 58-56, on January 16 in Louisville, KY. The Gorloks hung with the Golden Eagles for the duration of the contest, but lost a close one on the road.
Both teams battled back and forth to a 14-14 first period score. Spalding inched out to a five-point lead in the second period and led at the half, 28-26. Webster pulled ahead, 32-30, at the 5:00 mark in the third, but Spalding still had the lead at 40-38 entering the fourth period.
The Gorloks couldn't get over the top as the Golden Eagles maintained a five-point lead with five minutes left in the contest. Spalding then led, 48-41, when Ashley Brooks (SR, Hermann, MO/Hermann HS) hit two straight three-pointers to pull Webster within one. But the Golden Eagles pulled back ahead by four, 53-49, with 2:25 remaining and kept their advantage in the game's waning seconds for the win.
Both teams shot poorly on the afternoon with Webster at 34.4% (21-61) vs. Spalding at 33.3% (17-51). But the Golden Eagles went to the free throw line 12 more time than the Gorloks, hitting 20-28 compared to Webster's 10-16 from the charity stripe.
Nadine Vaughn (JR, Pana,IL/Pana HS) had a team-high 12 points and grabbed four rebounds. Taylor Lucas (SO, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan HS) had 11 points and tied for the team lead with five rebounds.
Brooks and Alyssa Sapp (SR, Ashland, MO/Southern Boone HS) both came off the bench to score eight and nine points, repectively.
Webster is 5-3 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and 8-7 overall on the season. Spalding is now tied with Webster at 5-3 in the SLIAC and is 11-4 overall.
Webster heads to Mt. Pleasant, IA, on January 20 to face Iowa Wesleyan University. The Gorloks will be back home on January 23 as they host Greenville College (IL).
