Winning on a layup by C.J. Moore with :00 on the clock, the Webster University men's basketball team defeated Greenville College (IL), 108-106, on January 23 at Grant Gymnasium. Sparked by Evan Milligan's 16 second half points, the win snapped a three-game skid for the Gorloks as they topped the 100-point barrier a second time this season vs. the Panthers.
Milligan (FR, Evansville, IN/Evansville Central HS) was fouled on a defensive rebound at 1:53 and hit both his free throws to bring the Gorloks within one. A pair of free throws by Moore (JR, Homestead, FL/Miami Killian HS) gave Webster the lead at 1:05, 104-103. A steal by Moore and, after being fouled, another pair of free throws, gave Webster a 106-103 lead but a Greenville three-pointer notted it up at 106-106 with :30 left before Moore's heroics.
Keeping up with Greenville's 'run and gun' style it has adopted this season, Webster had the lead at the half, 54-52. While the Gorloks shot 51% (21-42) from the field, with no three-pointers, the Panthers needed 10 from beyond the arc to keep pace with the Gorloks. Joseph Henry (JR, Leavenworth, KS/Lansing HS) was 6-6, scoring 12 points and grabbing four rebounds. Tehvan Crenshaw (JR, Mobile, AL/Murphy HS) had four points and nine rebounds, in nine minutes of action off the bench.
With Greenville holding an 11-point lead, 87-76, with 10:15 left in the second, the Panthers were caught with six men on the court. Hunter Ward (JR, Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood HS) hit both free throws on the technical foul, starting a 17-6 run by the Gorloks to tie the game at 93-93, with 4:35 remaining. Ward hit Webster's first three-pointer at 2:45 to make it, 102-100, Greenville. It was Webster's first three on the day, as opposed to 18 canned by Greenville.
Webster set a school record for points when they won at Greenville, 134-115, on December 2. The Gorloks wound up with 39 baskets (39-79) and were 29-39 from the free throw line. Ward's was the team's only three- as they finished 1-8. Greenville hit 19-46 three pointers in the contest. The Gorloks had 52 rebounds, including 19 offensive, in the game.
Moore had a season-high 25 points and dished out five assists. Ward had 22 points, nine rebounds, and five assists. Milligan had 16 points on 6-9 shooting and Henry had 12 points and seven rebounds.
Webster is now 5-5 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and 8-9 overall. Greenville falls to 5-5 and 6-11.
Webster is home on January 26, as they host Principia College. The Gorloks hit the road on January 30 as they travel to Eureka, IL, to take on Eureka College.
