The Webster University women's basketball team employed the long ball in building up a first half lead, then coasted to a 70-52 win over Principia College, on January 26 at Grant Gymnasium. The Gorloks broke a four-game skid as they improved to 6-5 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
The Gorloks utilized the three-pointer big time, shooting a scorching 8-11 (72.7%) from beyond the arc. Six different players hit threes for Webster. Kelsey Miller (SO, Elizabeth, IN/South Central HS) scored eight straight points, on two three-pointers and a layup off a steal, as Webster took a 16-6 lead in the first period. Webster led 26-15 at the end of the first and would lead, 45-33, at the half.
Miller was 4-5 from the field and 3-3 from the three-point line, scoring 11 points for the half. Nadine Vaughn (JR, Pana, IL/Pana HS) and Brittany Harris-Conway (SR, St. James, MO/John F. Hodge HS) each had six points for the half.
In the second half, Webster would extend its lead to 57-40 after three periods and cruised to the 70-55 final. The Gorloks finished the night shooting 29-61 (47.5%) from the field. Thirteen players broke into the scoring column for Webster as all 18 players on the roster saw action.
Miller was high scorer for the Gorloks with 13 points, and Vaughn and Kaitlin Snyder (JR, Maroa, IL/Maroa-Forsyth HS) each broke double figures with 10 points. Vaughn also had a team-high five assists for the game.
Webster is 9-9 overall on the season. The Gorloks travel to Eureka, IL on January 30 to take on Eureka College. Webster is back home on February 3 to face Blackburn College (IL) on Pink Zone night at Grant.
