Loss To Red Devils Puts Heat on Gorloks

The Webster University women's basketball team lost a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest at Eureka College (IL), 69-57, on January 30.  The loss dropped the Gorloks to .500 in SLIAC play at 6-6.

In a very tightly played game, Webster and Eureka were tied after the first period, 14-14, and at the half, 28-28.  Before the Red Devils went up 49-42 to end the third period, the largest lead by either team was four points, with the score tied nine times and with nine different lead changes.  Webster was still within four, down 52-48 at 7:39 in the fourth, but Eureka slowly increased its advantage through the period for the win.

Both teams shot around 39% from the field for the game but Eureka (6-22) hit four more three-pointers than Webster (2-11).  Despite the Gorloks shooting 79% (19-24) from the free throw line, the Red Devils hit 23 in 35 trips to the line, as Webster was called for 29 fouls in the contest.

Nadine Vaughn (JR, Pana, IL/Pana HS) once again led Webster with 14 points and 12 rebounds, hitting a double double for the afternoon.  Brittany Harris-Conway (SR, St. James, MO/John F. Hodge HS) had nine points and Alyssa Sapp (SR, Ashland, MO/Southern Boone HS) had eight, both coming off the bench.  Ashley Brooks (SR, Hermann, MO/Hermann HS) had eight points as well before fouling out.

Webster, who had defeated Eureka, 65-56, on January 4 at home, falls to 9-10 overall on the season.  Eureka improves to 7-5 in the SLIAC and 8-11 overall.

The Gorloks are home on February 3 vs. Blackburn College at Grant Gymnasium.  Webster hits the road on February 6 for the short ride down the boulevard as it resumes the 'Battle of Big Bend' at Fontbonne University.
