Webster Falls To Fontbonne At Home, 68-61

The Webster University men's basketball team lost to  Fontbonne University, 68-61, on January 6 at Grant Gym.  The Gorloks suffered a second straight loss at home to the Griffins, who broke a Webster 16-game win streak in the series with a win in the SLIAC Tournament at Grant last February.

The lead see-sawed back and forth in the second half after Fontbonne led at the break, 40-39, until the Griffins took a 55-49 lead with 10:25 left in the game.  Webster closed within two points several times down the stretch, but a number of missed layups kept the Gorloks from making a comeback.

The game started well as the Gorloks ran to a 31-15 lead midway though the first half.  But the Griffins responded with a 25-6 run to pull ahead, 40-37, with 45 seconds remaining and Fontbonne would lead, 40-39, at the break.  Tevin Evans (SR, St. Louis, MO/Chaminade HS) came off the bench to lead Webster for the half with nine points.

Joseph Henry (JR, Leavenworth, KS/Lansing HS) had 10 points and nine rebounds to lead Webster.  Evans wound up with 10 points in the game before fouling out with over 10 minutes left in the second half.  Hunter Ward (JR, Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood HS) had seven points and six rebounds, and added three blocked shots.

The Gorloks would up shooting just 34% for the game (23-67).  Fontbonne wasn't much better at 38% (24-64) but the Griffins went 14-16 from the free throw line and had six three pointers to the Gorloks' four for the game.

Webster was seeded #1 in the SLIAC Tournament, when the Gorloks fell to Fontbonne in the semi-finals at Grant on February 27, 2015.  With the loss, Webster falls to 3-2 in the SLIAC and 6-6 overall.

Webster is home on January 9 vs. MacMurray College (IL) and ends a four-game homestand with a game vs. Westminster College on January 13.
