Despite an impressive comeback to force overtime, the Webster University men's basketball team fell in the extra session to Westminster College, 98-94, on December 10 in Fulton, MO. Three Webster three-pointers in the final 14 seconds of regulation, two by Xavier Dortch and one by Evan Milligan with one second remaining, sent the game into OT but the heroics weren't enough as the Blue Jays came away with the win.
Down 84-77 in regulation, Dortch (SR, Stockton, AL/Faulkner St) hit a three with 0:14 on the clock to cut the deficit to four. After a pair of Westminster free throws, Dortch hit another at 0:05 to cut the deficit to three. The Blue Jays fouled on the inbound pass, giving the Gorloks the ball. Milligan (SO, Evansville, IN/Evansville Central) took a pass from Dortch a couple feet behind the arc and drained the three to send the game into overtime at 86-86.
A pair of free throws by Milligan gave Webster an 88-86 lead, and after Westminster answered with a pair of free throws of its own, a Milligan lay up put the Gorloks back up. Westminster scored seven straight points to grab a 95-90 lead. Another Milligan lay up and two more free throws by Dortch with 19 seconds left cut the Westminster lead to 96-94. But there would be no miracle comeback this time for Webster.
After falling behind, 5-0, to start the contest, Webster raced to a 19-11 lead by the 14:08 mark. Webster still led by eight, 27-19, at 7:58, before Westminster whittled the Gorlok lead down to two, 40-38, at the half. Webster shot a healthy 18-33 (54.5%) for the half. Hunter Ward (SR, St. Louis, MO/Kirkwood) led Webster with 15 points in the half, shooting 6-8 from the field, with four rebounds.
The Blue Jays started the second half with a 7-0 run to take a 45-40 lead. Ward hit a three-pointer at 12:58 to tie the game at 53-53. The game see-sawed back and forth over the next few minutes but a 7-1 run by the Gorloks, culminated by a pair of free throws with 5:03 remaining by Dortch, gave Webster a 70-63 lead. But the Blue Jays went on a 9-0 run and had a seven-point lead, 82-75, with 28 seconds on the clock before the fireworks in the final seconds of play.
Dortch and Milligan did all the Webster scoring from the final minute in regulation on through overtime. Dortch finished with 20 points, hitting four three-pointers in the game and was 4-4 from the free throw line. Milligan had 17 points, shooting 7-9 from the field, and had seven rebounds.
Ward finished with a double-double, leading Webster with 25 points, on 9-16 shooting...including 5-10 three-pointers, and 10 rebounds. C.J. Moore (SR, Homestead, FL/Miami Killian) had 14 points and a team-high five assists before fouling out.
The Gorloks shot 37-73 (50.7%) from the field, including 11-27 (40.7%) from the three-point line. Webster was 9-11 from the free throw line while Westminster got to the line 30 times, hitting 24 of them.
Webster's four-game win streak goes by the boards as it falls to 2-1 in the SLIAC and 4-5 overall. Westminster improved to 2-1 in the SLIAC and 4-3 overall.
The Gorloks have a week off before hosting Eureka College on December 17 at Grant Gym.
