Webster Tops Central, 71-60, Improves To 9-2

The Webster University women's basketball team defeated Central College (IA), 71-60, on December 30 at Grant Gymnasium.  The win gave the Gorloks a 7-1 record in non-conference play on the season, as they improved to 9-2 overall.

Four three-pointers by Kelsey Miller (JR, Elizabeth, IN/South Central) staked Webster to an early 14-7 lead.  A three-pointer by Jade Sawyer (FR, Republic, MO/Springfield Republic) and a steal and lay up by Ebony Bailey (JR, Dolton, IL/Seton Academy) extended the lead to 21-11.  Sawyer added another three to make it 24-13, and the period ended with Webster leading, 26-17.  The Gorloks were 6-12 from beyond the arc in the period.

The second period was a back and forth affair with both teams trading baskets most of the way.  A three by Sawyer at 1:40 gave Webster a 10-point lead at 42-32.  The Gorloks went into the locker room up, 43-35.  Webster had only two turnovers in the half, its lowest total in a half for the season.

Kaitlin Snyder (SR, Maroa, IL/Maroa-Forsythe) got the Gorloks started off on the right foot in the third period with a three-pointer, one minute in, to make it a 46-35 lead.  Miller made it a 12-point lead with a three-pointer at 7:20, 49-37.  Another three, by Sawyer, gave Webster a 54-40 lead at 4:30.  The Dutch went on a 7-0 to cut the Gorloks' lead to seven, but Webster responded with a 6-0 run to end the period for a 60-47 entering the fourth.

Webster continued to extend its lead, pulling ahead by 18, 68-50, with 5:30 left in the contest.  The Dutch tried to claw their way back, getting to within 11 before falling, 71-60.

Miller finished with a team-high 20 points, shooting 6-11 from beyond the three-point line.  Bailey had 14 points, four rebounds, and three steals coming off the bench, and Sawyer had 12 points coming off the bench as well.  Aley Lucas (JR, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan) had eight points and a team-high six rebounds and five assists.

Webster is 9-2 overall on the season.  Central fell to 8-3 with the loss.  The Gorloks will resume play in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference on January 4, 2017 at Iowa Wesleyan University in Mt. Pleasant, IA.
