The Webster University women's basketball team beat Iowa Wesleyan University, 60-50, on January 4 in Mt. Pleasant, IA. The Gorloks continued their breakout season as Aley and Taylor Lucas hit double figures in scoring and Jade Sawyer came off the bench to score a team-high.
Webster improved to 3-1 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and 10-2 overall with the victory. The Gorloks took a 15-7 first period lead and entered the locker room at the half up, 29-19. The Tigers clawed their way back, edging to within four, 44-40, with 46 seconds left in the third period. A three-pointer by Aley Lucas (JR, Sullivan, MO.Sullivan) gave Webster a 49-42 lead in the fourth and the Gorloks maintained a comfortable lead throughtout the remainder of the contest.
Aley Lucas finished with 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Taylor Lucas (JR, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan) had 12 points for the night and Sawyer (FR, Republic, MO/Springfield Republic) had a team-high 13 off the bench. Sawyer is now the Gorloks' second leading scorer on the season at 9.2 points per game, behind Kelsey Miller's (JR, Elizabeth, IN/South Central) 12.3 points per game.
Wesleyan had 22 turnovers as Webster picked up 10 steals in the game. The Gorloks also handed out 17 assists in the game. Webster ranks second nationally in the NCAA III in turnovers forced, steals, and assists per game. The Gorloks opponents average over 34 turnovers per game and Webster averages 18.4 steals and a shade under 12 assists per contest. The Gorloks are also ninth in scoring offense and in free throw percentage.
Wesleyan is now 2-2 in the SLIAC and 3-8 overall.
The Gorloks are home on January 7 to host Spalding University at Grant Gym.
