MacMurray Puts Damper on Webster Title Quest, 91-73

With a loss that put a damper on its hopes of a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title, the Webster University men's basketball team lost at MacMurray College, 91-73, on February 10 in Jacksonville, IL.  Webster falls into a tie with Spalding University (KY) for fifth place in the SLIAC with an 8-7 record.

The evening started with the Gorloks one game behind a four-team gridlock for first place, all at 9-5, that included MacMurray.  Spalding, at 8-7, was idle on the evening.  Webster will play three of the teams that were in the four-team pack, Westminster College, Spalding, and Iowa Wesleyan University, in its final three contests.

Webster trailed at the half, 37-32, and never could overtake MacMurray in the second as the Highlanders took the home court win.  MacMurray had too hot of a shooting hand for Webster, hitting 16-31 (51.3%) in the first half and a scorching 21-30 (70%) in the second.  Webster was a respectable 31-65 (47.7%) from the field in the contest, but couldn't overcome MacMurray's marksmanship.

The Highlanders also dominated on the boards, out rebounding the Gorloks, 36-18, in the game.  Webster only turned the ball over eight times, the second straight game they were in single digits in that category.

Hunter Ward (JR, Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood HS) led Webster with 18 points on 8-16 shooting.  C.J. Moore (JR, Homestead, FL/Miami Killian HS) had 15 points, had team-highs in rebounds with six and steals with four, and added five assists.  Rabassa Turner (JR, Memphis, TN/St.Benedict at Auburndale) had 11 points and three assists, and Xavier Dortch (JR, Stockton, AL/Faulkner State CC) had 12 points on 5-8 shooting.

Webster is 11-11 overall on the season with the loss.  MacMurray improves to 10-5 in the SLIAC and 13-9 overall.  Greenville College improved to 10-5 with a win over Fontbonne Universty,  and Westminster (9-5) had a late start at Blackburn College.  Iowa Wesleyan dropped into fourth at 9-6 with a loss at Eureka College.

Webster travels to Fulton, MO, to take on Westminster College on February 13.  The Gorloks are home on February 17 when Spalding University (KY) visits Grant Gymnasium.
