Webster Wins At Fontbonne, 79-67

The Webster University men's basketball team had a workmanlike, 79-67, win at Fontbonne University on February 6.  The Gorloks snapped a two-game skid to the Griffins as they continued their quest for a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason tournament berth, if not another league title.

The Gorloks kept the pressure on throughout the contest, forcing 21 Griffin turnovers while racking up 15 steals.  Webster wound up with a 30-10 advantage over Fontbonne in points off turnovers for the afternoon.  Webster had its second lowest number of turnovers on the season with only seven, and the 15 steals were its second highest total on the season as well.

Webster trailed early in the game, 5-0, but an 18-6 stretch put them up 18-11 at 11:15 in the first half.  The Gorloks led 30-20 at the 6:00 mark but a pair of Griffins free throws on a technical foul helped Fontbonne crawl within two at 35-33 at 2:00.

A pair of layups by Rabassa Turner (JR, Memphis, TN/St. Benedict at Auburndale) put Webster up six before the Gorloks settled for a 39-36 halftime lead.  Turner had 13 points on 5-7 shooting in the half and Hunter Ward (JR, Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood HS) had five points and a team-high nine rebounds.

In the second half, after Webster took a 48-41 lead at 15:09, the closest Fontbonne could get to the Gorloks for the duration was six points.  A steal and layup by Xavier Dortch (JR, Stockton, AL/Faulkner State CC) with 4:10 remaining gave Webster a comfortable 70-59 lead.  Fontbonne would close within six points one more time, with 1:30 left, but a Ward three-pointer ended any Griffin thoughts of a comeback.

Turner had a career-high 20 points on 7-11 shooting, including 4-8 from the three-point line.  Turner also had a team-high four steals.  Ward finished with 12 points and a season team-high 16 rebounds for a game.  It was Ward's sixth 'double double' on the season.  Evan Milligan (FR, Evansville, IN/Evansville Central HS) had 18 points before fouling out of the contest.

Webster's win was its second straight convincing SLIAC "Game of the Week victory, winning 84-67 at Eureka in last week's pick.  Webster is now 8-6 in the SLIAC and 11-10 overall.  Fontbonne falls to 6-8 and 8-13 overall.  The Griffins had beaten the Gorloks their last two meetings, both at Grant Gym.

The Gorloks travel to Jacksonville, IL, on February 10 to face MacMurray College.  Webster will play at Westminster College, in Fulton, MO, on February 13.
