Gorloks Blank Cardinals In Home Opener, 2-0

The Webster University women's soccer team won its home opener, defeating North Central College, 2-0, on September 13 at the Soccer Park.  Aly Miller and Abbey Mercer shared the shutout in the nets as Webster won its first game of the young season.

Nicole Bascio (SO, St. Louis, MO/Timberland) who had just entered the game a short time before, took a cross from Brianna Pagan (JR, St. Louis, MO/Washington) and fired it in for a 1-0 lead for Webster at 28:10 in the first half.  Pagan netted a goal of her own just a couple minutes later with a blast from the right corner of the box at 30:30  Though the Gorloks dominated play, the Cardinals had a 7-6 edge in shots for the half with most coming from long range.

Miller (FR, Middleville, MI/Thornapple) got the start and had two saves for the half.  She would picked up the win to even her record at 1-1.  Mercer (FR, Granite City, IL/Granite City) made her debut for Webster, taking over the nets in the second half.  She faced nine shots and came up with four saves to preserve the shutout.

Webster outshot North Central 13-9 in the second half and had numerous chances to score but settled for the 2-0 final.  Briann Johnson (JR, Hannibal, MO/Hannibal) flashed her speed several times, scooting by the defense to get off five shots on goal...but was stoned on all five by the Cardinal goalie.

Twenty players saw action for Webster in the contest.

Webster is 1-2 on the season as North Central falls to 1-3-1.  The Gorloks host Rose-Hulman Institute on September 15 at the Soccer Park.  They travel to Memphis, TN, to face Hendrix College (AR) and host Rhodes College on September 17-18.
