The Webster University men's basketball team rebounded in fine fashion with come from behind win over Spalding University, 77-73, on January 7, at Grant Gym. The Gorloks, coming off a tough loss at Iowa Wesleyan, experienced the joy of victory as opposed to the agony of defeat.
C.J. Moore (SR, Homestead, FL/Miami Killian) blocked a Spalding three-point attempt at 0:07 in the second half and Evan Milligan snatched the rebound. Moore was fouled and hit both free throws for the 77-73 final. Moore was 11-11 on the night from the free throw line, all in the second half.
A Hunter Ward (SR, St. Louis, MO/Kirkwood) rebound and lay up, off a Xavier Dortch (SR, Stockton, AL/Faulkner St) three-point miss, gave Webster its first lead of the game, 68-67, at the 2:50 mark in the second. Spalding regained the lead on a lay up at 1:35, but another Ward lay up put Webster right back on top, 72-71. Spalding went back on top with a lay up at :51...but once again Ward dropped in a lay up to give Webster the lead at :36, and was fouled on the play. Ward proceeded to hit the free throw to make it 75-73.
The Gorloks fell behind early, with the Golden Eagles leading by eight, 24-16, midway through the first half. Webster pulled within two, 30-28, on a put back by Michael Dunn (JR, Tallahassee, FL/Lawton Chiles), at 1:40, but trailed at the break, 36-30. Spalding beat Webster on the boards, 19-11, in the half and out shot the Gorloks, 15-31 (48%) to 11-26 (42%).
A Ward three-pointer pulled Webster within one, 43-42, five minutes into the second half. The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 57-49 at 10:55, but two quick baskets by the Gorloks cut it to 57-53, before Spalding extended it right back to eight at 61-53 at 9:30 mark. A Rabassa Turner (SR, Memphis,TN/St. Benedict at Auburndale) three-pointer cut it to three and an Milligan (SO, Evansville, IN/Evansville Central) lay up cut the deficit to one at 7:30, 63-62, before the game's final heroics.
Moore tied his career-high with 25 points in the contest, shooting 7-11 from the field and 11-11 from the free throw line. Ward had 21 points, on 8-12 shooting, and four assists. Milligan finished at 16 points with a team-high six rebounds.
Webster wound up shooting 27-55 (49%) for the game from the field and 21-25 (84%) from the charity stripe. The Gorloks only turned the ball over nine times in the contest.
The Gorloks lost at Iowa Wesleyan when the Tigers hit a three-pointer with three seconds left for the win. Pulling out the win over the Golden Eagles took some of the sting out of that loss for Webster.
Webster is 3-2 in the SLIAC and 6-6 overall. Webster has a make up game with Eureka College at Grant Gym on January 9 before starting a four-game road stretch, on January 11 at Blackburn College.
