The Webster University women's soccer team took on the tough task of taking on the #2 team in the country on the road, and came away with its first loss, 4-0, to Washington University, on September 26, at Clayton, MO. The Gorloks hung tough with the Bears in a scoreless first half, but three second half goals gave Washington U the win.
The Bears came out firing as they got off 16 shots in the games' first 31 minutes, with six on goal vs. Webster goalie Aly Miller (SO, Middleville, MI/Thornapple), but Miller kept them off the board. The teams would enter the locker room scoreless.
Alissa Coralic (JR, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) took over the nets in the second half for Webster. The Gorloks suffered a stunner when the Bears scored a goal just 12 seconds into the half to take a 1-0 lead. Washington U had a near miss minutes later with a shot just wide. The Bears would take a 2-0 lead with a goal at 50:56.
Washington U would extend its lead to 4-0 with goals off Coralic at 70:43 and one at 87:22. Coralic wound up making six saves as well as she faced 19 shots. She took her first loss of the season as she falls to 3-1.
Webster is now 8-1 on the season. The Gorloks are ranked 6th in latest United Soccer Coaches Central Region poll, the team's highest ranking since 2002. Washington U, ranked 2nd nationally and first in the Central Region, improves to 8-0-1. The Bears fell from the #1 spot after tie with Wheaton College (IL).
Webster opens play in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference when it hosts Iowa Wesleyan University on September 30 at the Soccer Park.
