EUREKA, Ill. - Webster University remained undefeated in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer play here Saturday afternoon as the Gorloks scored a season high 11 goals in posting an 11-0 victory over Eureka College at Traister Field.
With the victory, Webster extended its win streak to seven straight matches and improved to 14-2-1 overall and 7-0-0 in the SLIAC, while Eureka fell to 0-14-0 overall and 0-7-0 in the league.
In Saturday's win, the Gorloks scored 10 of their 11 goals in the first half as they took 39 shots in the opening 45 minutes to lead 10-0 at the half and then scored on its only shot of the second half to post its fifth shutout in seven league matches this season.
Junior forward
Melissa Kasper (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) and freshman forward
Jordan Lande (Sachse, Texas/Sachse) each had two goals in the win. In addition to Kasper and Lande, seven other Gorloks scored a goal in the win.
The Gorloks wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in Saturday's match as senior midfielder
Carolyn Ries (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) took a pass from Kasper and found the net for her seventh goal of the season just 70 seconds into the contest.
About 65 seconds later, Kasper would score her first goal of the match to give the Gorloks a 2-0 lead just a little over two minutes into the match.
Junior midfielder
Savannah Page (Sandy, Utah/Sandy) took a pass from Kasper and scored WU's third goal late in the second minute of the match to give the Gorloks a 3-0 lead.
Senior forward
Nicole Bascio (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland), who tallied a hat trick in Thursday's 5-0 home win over Spalding, added her 13th goal of the season in the eighth minute. Bascio's goal was assisted by junior midfielder
Olivia Osterhage (Eureka, Mo./Eureka).
Webster's fifth goal was scored in the 10th minute as junior midfielder
Payton Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) took a pass from senior defender
Jillian Zimpfer (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles) and found the goal for her sixth goal of the season.
Lande would score her first goal in the 21st minute as she took a pass from freshman midfielder
Kaitlyn Theriot (Lake St. Louis, Mo./Liberty) and found the goal to give WU a 6-0 lead.
Kasper's second goal came in the 27th minute off a pass from sophomore forward
Joi Wilson (Tracy, Calif./Tracy) to give the Gorloks a 7-0 advantage. It was the third time this season that Kasper has scored at least two goals in a match.
Sophomore defender
Lexey Grapentine (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) gave Webster an 8-0 lead in the 30th minute as she took an assist from Theriot and found the net for the first time in her collegiate career.
WU's final two goals of the first half came in the 34th minute as sophomore midfielder
Cassidy Bishop (Salt Lake City, Utah/West) tallied an unassisted goal and Lande added her second goal, which came off a pass from Kasper.
Freshman defender
Ryleigh Grommet (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) would complete the scoring just 74 seconds into the second half as she took a pass from Osterhage and tallied her first career collegiate goal.
From that point, Webster kept the ball near midfield as they wouldn't take another shot, nor allow a shot by Eureka over the final 23-plus minutes of the match that was halted after 70 minutes was completed.
Theriot and Lande each recorded five shots in the match, while Kasper, Bascio, Page and Wilson each had four shots and Bishop added three shots.
Bascio, Theriot and Lande each had four of WU's 27 shots on goal in the win.
With her two goals and a career-high tying three assists, Kasper finished with seven points in the match and has now become the 23rd active NCAA Division III player to record 30 career goals and 20 career assists as Kasper has scored 31 career goals and has had 34 career assists for a total of 96 career points.
The Red Devils were held without a shot in the match and it marked the second time this season that Webster has held an opponent without a shot as they also didn't allow a shot to Blackburn in its 10-0 win at home on Oct. 9.
Junior goalkeeper
Abbey Mercer (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) earned the win in goal for the Gorloks as she played all 70 minutes and improved to 2-0-0 on the season as she didn't record any saves or face any shots.
Abby Swope (0-14-0) took the loss in goal for the Red Devils as she recorded 15 saves, along with allowing 11 goals.
The Gorloks will remain on the road as they travel to Mount Pleasant, Iowa, for a 1 p.m. match on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at Iowa Wesleyan.
