Softball Drops Both Ends of Home Doubleheader to Westminster, Snaps Four Game Win Streak

WEBSTER GROVES - Webster University closed out its schedule of home games this season at Blackburn Park here Wednesday by dropping both ends of a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader to Westminster (Mo.) College.

In the opener, the Gorloks fell 2-0 to the Blue Jays behind a complete game no-hitter from Westminster sophomore Katie Price and then fell 2-1 in the nightcap, despite recording seven hits and leaving nine runners on base.

With the two setbacks, Webster moves its record to 10-10 overall and 5-3 in the SLIAC, while Westminster improved to 10-12 overall and 6-0 in the SLIAC. Wednesday's doubleheader was a match-up between two of the four teams in the league standings.

In the nightcap of Wednesday's doubleheader, sophomore shortstop Taylor White (St. Charles, Mo./Lutheran St. Charles) and freshman leftfielder Skiela Martinez (Whittier, Calif./California) each had two of Webster's seven hits.

Westminster jumped in front 2-0 in the top of the first inning as they used three hits, including an RBI single by Aubrie Vaughn and an RBI groundout by Price.

After getting no-hit in Wednesday's opener by Price, the Gorloks made sure they wouldn't get no-hit in the nightcap as White led of the bottom of the first inning with a single to left field off of Blue Jays starter Madison Ingram. After White's single, sophomore centerfielder Abby Burroughs (Edwardsville, Ill./Triad) drew a walk to put runners on first and second with no outs. Ingram, though, would get out of the jam as she struck out two of next three Gorloks to end the inning.

The Gorloks would finally dent the scoreboard in the second inning as senior pitcher Morgan Mansur (Decatur, Ill./Lincoln Land CC) walked to lead off the inning, moved to second on a bunt and scored on an RBI double to right center by Martinez. Following Martinez's doubles, White drew a walk that chased Ingram from the game and brought Price back into the game.

Neither team would score again, but both teams had scoring chances in the seventh inning.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Blue Jays put runners on first and second thanks to singles by Amarie White and Emily Holloway, but Mansur would prevent either runner from scoring as she forced Brooke Laidley to pop out and Amber Tepen to fly out to end the inning.

Martinez would open the bottom of the seventh with a lead off single up the middle and after the next two Gorloks popped up, senior first baseman Tessa Johanning (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) drilled the first pitch she saw in the inning from Price to center to put runners on first and second. With the tying run in scoring position with two outs, senior designed player Katlyn Garza (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt North) came to the plate, but she ended the game with a ground out.

Mansur (6-4) took the loss in the circle in the nightcap as she pitched seven innings and allowed seven hits and two runs, while walking two and striking out five.

Price (6-6) picked up the win in the nightcap, after her no-hitter in the opener, after pitching 5.1 innings in relief and allowing five hits and no runs, while striking out two and walking none.

Meanwhile, in Wednesday's opener, the Blue Jays scored the only run they would need in the top of the first inning as they used a double, a fielding error by Webster senior rightfielder Chelsea Thornley (Clinton, Mo./Clinton) and a sacrifice fly to score an unearned run. In the inning, the Gorloks would commit two of their three errors in the game.

Westminster pushed its lead to 2-0 in the third inning thanks an RBI single by Price that plated Holloway, who led off the frame with a single to right.

In the game, Webster only had three base runners as Burroughs reached base in the second in an error by third baseman Madison Washington, while in the third, White reached base in the third on an error by Blue Jays first baseman Callie Collier and senior catcher Terri Dearth (Lemont, Ill./Southwestern Illinois) was hit by a pitch.

After hitting Dearth with a pitch, Price retired next 13 Gorloks in order to secure her no-hitter. In the win, Price didn't walk a batter and struck out three in her 75 pitch outing.

The Blue Jays recorded nine hits in the opener as Holloway, Price and Aubrie Vaughn each had two hits in the win.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Johnson (East Alton, Ill./Greenville University) took the loss in the circle for the Gorloks as she pitched six innings and allowed nine hits and two runs (one earned), while walking two and striking out one.

Webster will three days off before returning to action on Sunday, April 15 as they travel to Carlinville, Ill., for a SLIAC doubleheader against Blackburn College. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
