Men's Tennis Falls at Home in SLIAC Action to Greenville

WEBSTER GROVES - Webster University returned to St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play here Wednesday evening by suffering a 9-0 setback to Greenville at the Webster Groves Tennis Center.

With the setback, Webster falls to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the SLIAC, while Greenville improves to 15-2 overall and 3-1 in the league. 

In Wednesday's action, the Gorloks opened by dropping all three doubles matches, including losing two of the three matches by identical 8-4  scores.

At the No. 1 spot, sophomore Riley Muren (O'Fallon, Mo./Illinois-Springfield) and junior Charles McGhee (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) fell 8-4 to Greenville's No. 1 tandem of Nate Wieland and Justin Tilford, while the No. 3 team of freshman Nicolas Andrade (Quito, Ecuador/Francis Howell) and freshman Zach Bliss (Branson, Mo./Branson) also fell 8-4 to Greenville's tandem of Gabriel Munoz and Austin Burkhart.

The No. 2 doubles team of freshmen Austin Nation (Oklahoma City, Okla./Purcell) and Tom Shutzman (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South) fell 8-1 to Zach Plocher and Daniel Pieplow.

In singles action, the Gorloks struggled against the Panthers as they won a total of 19 games in the six matches. 

Three of the six singles matches were competitive as Andrade fell 6-3, 6-4 to Burkhart at the No. 6 spot, while Shutzman suffered a 6-2, 6-3 setback to Pieplow at the No. 3 spot and Muren fell 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot to Wieland. 

Nation fell 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot to Munoz, while at the No. 4 and No. 5 spot, Greenville posted wins by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores.

Webster will return to action in less than 24 hours as they travel to Fulton, Mo., for a 4:30 p.m. SLIAC match at Westminster (Mo.) College.
