Men's Tennis Picks Up SLIAC Road Win Over Westminster

FULTON, Mo. - Webster University Men's Tennis rebounded from its 9-0 loss on Wednesday to Greenville University here Thursday by posting a 5-4 victory over Westminster (Mo.) College in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at the Robert Elder Memorial Tennis Court on the Westminster College campus.

With Thursday's win, Webster improves to 6-4 overall on the season and 2-1 in the SLIAC, while Westminster concludes league play with a 2-5 record and a 1-3 mark in the SLIAC.

Thursday's match was a back-and-forth affair as every match, but two were close and competitive, but the Gorloks were able to secure the match win by winning four of the six singles matches.

Westminster opened Thursday's match by scoring two of its four points in doubles as they won by identical 8-4 scores at both the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles spots. The Gorloks, though, prevented a sweep by the Blue Jays in doubles as freshmen Nicolas Andrade (Quito, Ecuador/Francis Howell) and Zach Bliss (Branson, Mo./Branson) paired together to earn an 8-5 win at the No. 3 spot over Westminister's duo of Giovanni Strickland and Nick Lakowski. Andrade and Bliss improved to 3-4 on the season in doubles.

Meanwhile, in singles action, Webster picked up wins at the Nos. 3, 4, 5 and 6 spots in its singles line-up to secure the victory.

In singles, Webster's wins came from freshman Tim Shutzman (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South) at the No. 3 spot as he earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Strickland, while junior Charles McGhee (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) collected a shutout win at the No. 4 spot over Joshua Udinyiwe (6-0, 6-0) and Bliss defeated Lakowski at the No. 5 spot by scores of 6-2, 6-1. The final Webster win was picked up at the No. 6 spot as Andrade defeated Bryce Looney by identical 6-1, 6-1 scores.

The Blue Jays wins in singles came at the top two spots as Adam Fuchs earned a 6-3, 6-3 win over Webster sophomore Riley Muren (O'Fallon, Mo./Illinois-Springfield) and Phillip Udinyiwe picked up hard fought win in a third set tiebreaker over freshman Austin Nation (Oklahoma City, Okla./Purcell) at the No. 2 spot.

At No. 2 singles, Nation opened by picking up a 6-1 win in the first set, before Udinyiwe earned a 6-4 win in the second set to force a third set tiebreaker. The tiebreaker proved to be a back-and-forth affair as the two players combined to score 28 points as Udinyiwe would prevail, 15-13 to give Westminster its fourth and final point of the match.

Webster will close out its SLIAC schedule this coming Saturday, April 14 as they travel to Elsah, Ill., for a 4 p.m. match against Principia College.
