Road Struggles Continue for Softball, Drop Both Ends of Doubleheader Tuesday at Eureka

EUREKA, Ill. - Webster University continued its eight game stretch of games on the road here Tuesday afternoon as they dropped both ends of its St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader to Eureka College at the Eureka College Softball Field.

Eureka won Tuesday's opener 6-5 in eight innings on a walk-off sacrifice fly by Courtney Kurtz and then the Red Devils posted a 4-2 win in the nightcap despite a career high eight strikeouts from sophomore pitcher Kaitlyn Johnson (East Alton, Ill./Greenville University).

The two setbacks severely damaged Webster's hopes to earn one of four spots in this year's SLIAC Tournament that begins next Friday as the two losses dropped Webster's record to 11-15 overall and 6-6 in the SLIAC. With six games left in the regular season, the Gorloks are five games behind both Eureka and Fontbonne in the standings, who are both 11-5 in the league and those two teams face other to end the regular season on Saturday.

Tuesday's losses marked Webster fourth consecutive on the road and five of six overall on its current eight game road swing that ends with a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. on Wednesday at Blackburn College.

In Tuesday's opener, both teams recorded eight hits, including Webster senior catcher Terri Dearth going 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI.

Webster got the scoring started in Tuesday's opener on a one-out solo home run over the fence in right by senior pitcher Morgan Mansur (Decatur, Ill./Lincoln Land CC) in the top of the second inning. The homer was the second on Mansur's career, both of which came this season.

The Red Devils answered Webster in the bottom of the second on an RBI double by Kali George.

Webster, though, retook the lead in the third inning on a solo homer by Dearth and an RBI double by senior first baseman Katlyn Garza (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt North) off of Eureka's Erin Smith.

Eureka responded with putting up four runs on four hits in the fourth to take a 5-3 lead off of Mansur.

Trailing by two heading into the seventh, the Gorloks used an RBI double by senior second baseman Tessa Johanning (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) and an RBI single by sophomore centerfielder Abby Burroughs (Edwardsville, Mo./Triad) to tie the game at 5 and force extra innings for the second time in its last three games as they 10 innings in Sunday's first game at Augustana (Ill.).

In the eighth, freshman Amanda Kraus (Valley Park, Mo./Valley Park) was placed on second due to the international tie breaker rule and moved to third when Mansur led off the inning with a bunt. Smith, though, would leave Kraus stranded at third as forced junior third baseman Brienna Sheperd (Central Point, Ore./College of the Redwoods) to pop up for the second out and then induced senior second baseman Chelsea Thornley (Clinton, Mo./Clinton) to line out to end the inning.

The Red Devils would open the bottom of the eighth with Adrianna Zeman on second, who moved to third on a bunt by Kurtz and would score the game winning run on a sacrifice fly by George.

George's sacrifice fly made a loser out of Mansur (7-6) in the circle for the Gorloks as she tossed 7.2 innings and allowed eight hits and six runs (5 earned), while walking three and striking out two.

Smith (11-2) earned the win for Eureka as she tossed eight innings and allowed eight hits and five runs (3 earned), while walking three and fanning two.

Kurtz had two of her team's eight hits in the opener.

Webster committed three errors and left seven runners on base, while Eureka had an error and stranded six runners on base.

Meanwhile, in the nightcap, Eureka's offense erupted for four runs on three hits and a Webster error to take a 4-0 lead in the game. The big hit in the inning was a grand slam off the bat of Gabby Wood.

The Gorloks, though, would get one of those runs back in the top of the fourth thanks to singles by Dearth and Johanning, a passed ball and a wild pitch.

Entering the seventh, Webster trailed 4-1, but three straight singles, including an RBI single by Kraus off of George brought the Gorloks within two runs at 4-2. George, though, would prevent further damage as she struck out sophomore shortstop Taylor White (St. Charles, Mo./Lutheran St. Charles) to end the game.

Johnson (2-4) pitched perhaps one of the better games as a Gorlok on Tuesday as she tossed all six innings and allowed four hits and four runs, all of which came on Wood's third inning grand slam, while walking three and striking out a season high eight. Johnson retired the Red Devils in order in second and fourth innings.

George (10-5) earned the win in the nightcap as she tossed a complete game six hitter, while allowing two runs and striking out three.

Webster had six hits in the nightcap as the hits were recorded by Death, Johanning, Garza, Sheperd, Kraus and junior catcher Casey Cullinane (Simi Valley, Calif./College of the Redwoods).

Krysten Wallace had two of the Red Devils' six hits.

Both teams committed two errors and the teams each left five runners stranded on base.
