Women's Basketball Runs Past Blackburn, Extends Win Streak to Five Straight

CARLINVILLE, Ill. – Webster University Women's Basketball hit the road for the first time in 2019 here Wednesday evening as the Gorloks scored over 20 points in all four periods en route to posting a 91-58 victory over Blackburn College in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Dawes Gymnasium.

The victory extended Webster's win streak to five straight games and improved its record to 11-3 overall and 6-1 in the SLIAC. Blackburn fell to 3-11 overall and 1-6 in the league with the loss.

Along with scoring over 20 points in all four periods of Wednesday's game against the Beavers, the Gorloks also shot 50 percent from both the field and 3-point line and scored 25 points off of Blackburn's 19 turnovers.

On the night, three Gorloks scored in double figures and 13 of the 15 players that suited up scored at least two points in the win.

Leading the way offensively for the Gorloks was freshman forward Addison Beussink (Jackson, Mo./Saxony Lutheran) as she tallied 16 points and pulled down nine boards, while sophomore guard Naomi Johnson (St. Louis, Mo./Greenville University) added 14 points and junior guard Jaysea Morgan (Fisk, Mo./Twin Rivers) chipped in with 13 points and five assists.

In addition to those three double-digit scorers, freshman forward Taylor Zarr (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) and sophomore guard jasmine Bishop (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) each added seven points. For Bishop, the seven points marked a new career high.

Webster, who has now won 15 straight games against Blackburn, jumped out to a 22-7 lead after the opening period and led 45-19 at the half. The 26 point halftime lead was the largest of the season for the Gorloks.

The seven points allowed in the first period was the second fewest of the season allowed by the Gorloks, while the 19 first half matched a season best effort by WU's defense. Saint Mary's (Ind.) was held to 19 first half points in Webster's 70-49 win at home on Dec. 29.

Webster opened the third period on a 9-0 run keyed by four points from Beussink and capped by a basket from Morgan with 6:38 left in the period. Morgan's score gave the Gorloks a 56-19 lead.

Blackburn, though answered by closing the period outscoring the Gorloks, 13-4 to cut WU's lead to 69-32 after three periods.

Webster's lead eventually reached as much as 42 points following a basket from freshman forward Courtney Ragland (New Athens, Ill./New Athens) just a little over two-plus minutes into the final period. Ragland's basket made the score 76-34. Ragland finished the night with five points off the bench as WU's bench outscored Blackburn, 35-26.

The Beavers would chip away at WU's 42 point lead as they closed the game on a 24-15 run to set the final margin at 33 points. In the period, Blackburn hit nine field goals and was 8-for-10 from the free throw line.

Jenna Dudra paced the Beavers with 21 points, including tallying 12 of those 21 points in the fourth period. In addition to Dudra, Savannah Kruse added 15 points off the bench and Gariel Pierce scored 11 points and had six boards.

Dudra and Kruse combined to score 19 of BC's 26 fourth period points.

While Webster shot 51 percent from the field and 50 percent from the 3-point line, Blackburn finished the game shooting 40 percent from the floor and was held to 14 percent shooting from the 3-point line. The Gorloks entered the game second in the league in field goal percentage defense (35.7 percent) and fourth in 3-point field goal defense (28.1 percent) on the season.
