Women's Soccer Offensive Struggles Continue in Senior Day Setback to Fontbonne

FENTON, Mo. - Webster University Women's Soccer celebrated the accomplishments of its six member senior class prior to the beginning of Saturday's home St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match with Fontbonne, but for the second straight match, the Gorloks offense was held without a goal as the Gorloks fell 1-0 to Fontbonne on Senior Day at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.

This year's six seniors would soon like to forget Saturday's match as the Gorloks were shutout in back-to-back matches for the first time since the beginning of the 2016 season when all six of those seniors were freshmen. In 2016, the Gorloks opened the season with back-to-back road losses at Edgewood (1-0) and at 21st-ranked Augustana (2-0).

The six seniors who were honored prior to Saturday's match were student manager and former player Janel Bond (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day), defender Lilly Brauer (Belleville, Ill./Belleville East), forward Melissa Kasper (Oswego, Ill./Oswego), goalkeeper Abbey Mercer (Granite City, Ill./Granite City), midfielder Olivia Osterhage (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) and midfielder Savannah Page (Sandy, Utah/Jordan).

With the setback, Webster falls to 9-4-1 overall and moves into a second place in the SLIAC standings with Fontbonne with a 3-1-1 league mark. Fontbonne, who snapped a game match losing skid against the Gorloks with the win, improves its record to 8-5-3 overall. Greenville (7-5-2 overall, 4-0-1) sits atop the league standings heading into the final two weeks of the regular season.

Saturday's 1-0 shutout loss came just three days after the Gorloks played to a 0-0 double overtime draw against Westminster at home. Since scoring a goal in the 17th minute of its 1-0 win at Spalding on Oct. 12, the Gorloks have been held scoreless over the last 272 minutes.

The Gorloks, who outshot Westminster 25-7 on Wednesday. held a 14-13 edge in shots against Fontbonne, including outshooting them, 9-4 in the second half. In addition, WU also held a 7-2 edge in shots on goal.

Webster had several opportunities in the opening 14 minutes of the match to score, including Kasper having a breakaway chance denied by FBU goalkeeper Makayla Hussong in the fourth minute. In the ninth minute, Page has her shot on goal stopped by Hussong and in the 14th minute, sophomore forward Jordan Lande (Sachse, Texas/Sachse) has a transition chance, but she puts the shot high over the goal to keep it scoreless.

Mercer, who started in goal in Saturday's match, prevented a score by the Griffins late in the first half on a shot by Kierstyn Weaver.

After neither team was able to score in the opening half, Fontbonne would jump in front 1-0 just a little over two minutes into the second half as Molly Kovarik took an assist from Weaver and connected from about six yards out against freshman goalkeeper Taryn Banfield (Plano, Texas/Plano East) for the ninth goal of the season. Banfield replaced Mercer in net for the second half.

In the 56th minute, Page's free kick is put on goal, but Hussong makes the save and about three minutes later, Kasper puts a shot on goal that is saved by FBU.

In the 75th minute, Kasper has her cross that appeared headed toward the goal stopped by Hussong to keep the score 1-0 in Fontbonne's favor.

The Gorloks, who suffered their first loss in league play since falling 2-1 in overtime at Spalding on Oct. 21, 2015, continued to apply pressure over the final four minutes of the match, but two of their shots went wide left, including a shot by Page with 55 seconds left and another shot by sophomore midfielder Ryleigh Grommet (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) was blocked.

Since that loss at Spalding, Webster had reeled off 32 consecutive wins and a total of 33 non-losses in row before Saturday's result.

Kasper paced Webster's offense with six shots and three shots on goal, while Page took four shots and had three shots on goal in the loss. In the match, six Gorloks accounted for their 15 shots.

Banfield (8-3-1) took the loss in net for the Gorloks as she allowed one goal and didn't face any other shots on goal over the final 45 minutes. Mercer had one save in the first half.

Weaver and Kovarik combined for four shots each for the Griffins and each player had FBU's only shots on goal in the victory.

Hussong (8-5-3) played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded seven saves in earning the shutout in net.

Webster also held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks and the match featured 16 fouls and Webster was whistled for 16 fouls and recorded three yellow cards, while FBU had 10 fouls and didn't record a card.

The Gorloks will look to snap its two-match losing skid this coming Wednesday, Oct. 23 as they travel to Carlinville, Ill., for a 3 p.m. SLIAC match against Blackburn College.
