Women's Soccer Tallies 13 Goals in SLIAC Home Opener Against Iowa Wesleyan

FENTON, Mo. - Thanks to a third career hat trick from senior forward Melissa Kasper (Oswego, Ill./Oswego), Webster University Women's Soccer posted a 13-0 victory over Iowa Wesleyan in its St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference home opener here Wednesday evening at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.

The 13 goals marked the second consecutive match in which the Gorloks have scored 13 goals as they opened SLIAC play with a 13-0 win on Saturday at Eureka. It also marked the first time in the program's 21 year history that the Gorloks had scored 13 goals in back-to-back matches.

Kasper's hat trick was the second one this season recorded by a Gorlok as sophomore forward Jordan Lande (Sachse, Texas/Sachse) had a hat trick against Illinois College. In addition, Kasper recorded hat tricks last season against both MacMurray and Iowa Wesleyan.

With the victory, Webster extends its win streak to three straight games and moves its record to 8-3-0 overall and 2-0 in the SLIAC, while Iowa Wesleyan fell to 0-6-1 overall and 0-2 in the SLIAC.

Kasper wasted little time in getting the Gorloks on the scoreboard as she took an assist from senior midfielder Olivia Osterhage (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) and scored the first goal of the game just 80 seconds into the match.

Lande would then score two straight goals, which were both set up by assists from Osterhage, in the 12th and 18th minutes to give the Gorloks a 3-0 lead. The three assists by Osterhage tied a career high and is tied for 11th on the school's single match chart.

Kasper added her second goal in the 20th minute as she took a pass from senior midfielder Savannah Page (Sandy, Utah/Jordan) and connected from 12 yard out to give the Gorloks a 4-0 lead.

Page gave the Gorloks a 5-0 lead in the 22nd minute as she took a pass from sophomore midfielder Jordan Bilyeu (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) and connected on a shot from 18 yards out. The goal by Page was her 11th of the season.

Sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Theriot (Lake St. Louis, Mo./Liberty) got into the scoring column in the 24th minute as she scored from 16 yards out off an assist from freshman midfielder Carlee McCormack (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) and about 66 seconds later, freshman midfielder Sophie Lambiase (Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas/Samuel V Champion) gave WU a 7-0 lead as she scored her first career goal off an assist from freshman forward Mackenzie O'Neal (Milwaukee, Wis./South Milwaukee).

Junior defender Kaleigh Finney (Concord, Calif./Northgate) would score the Gorloks final two goals of the first half in the 27th and 38th minutes. The goal in the 27th minute came off an from O'Neal and the goal in the 38th minute came off an assist from freshman defender Keri Voegtle (St. Louis, Mo./Windsor).

The two goals by Finney were a career high, while the two goals by Lande marked her fourth multiple goal game of the season, including scoring six goals in her last two matches.

Kasper completed her hat trick just 62 seconds into the second half as she took a pass from sophomore midfielder Ryleigh Grommet (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) and scored from 15 yards out. Grommet would then complete the scoring early in the 51st minute as she took a pass from Page and scored her first goal of the season from 12 yards out.

The 13 goals and 13 assists by the Gorloks totaled 39 points in the match and the 39 points are tied for fourth most on the school's single game list and the most points scored by the Gorloks in a match since tallying 38 points against Iowa Wesleyan in 2015.

Freshman Taryn Banfield (Plano, Texas/Plano East) started in net for the Gorloks and didn't face shot for the second straight match in posting her second straight combined shutout with senior goalkeeper Abbey Mercer (Granite City, Ill./Granite City), who played the final 30-plus minutes of the game. Banfield improved her record to 7-3-0 on the season with Wednesday's win.
