BELLEVILLE, Ill. – Webster University swept the initial St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Track and Field Athlete of the Week awards for the 2019 outdoor track and field season on Monday afternoon.
The league named sophomore
Minnell Fundora (Miami, Fla./John A. Ferguson) and junior
Daisha Reece (Norman, Okla./Rogers State) as this week's Track and Field Athletes of the Week respectively.
Fundora earns this season's initial Women's Track Athlete of the Week honor after demolishing her old personal record in the mile to set a new school record in the event after finishing second in a very competitive field consisting of all division's at this past weekend's Rhodes Invitational. In the mile, Fundora ran a time of 5:15.51 to shatter the old school mark of 5:59.63 set by junior
Jessica Phibbs (Vancouver, Wash./Mountain View) at last year's Rhodes Invitational.
In addition to her performance in the mile run, Fundora was fourth in the 800 meter dash with a personal best time of 2:20.28 and ran the second leg of Webster's 4-x-400-meter relay team that ran a time of 4:13.76 to finish in ninth place overall. In the mile and 800-meters, Fundora was the highest Division III finisher in both events.
Meanwhile, Reece earns this season's initial Women's Field Athlete of the Week honor after recording a school record leap in the long jump to second overall among a field of 39 competitors from all divisions at this past weekend's Rhodes College Invitational. In the long jump at the Rhodes, Reece recorded a leap of 17-11 (5.46 meters), which bettered the old school mark of 17-10.25 set by sophomore
Johnae' Hightower (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit North) at Missouri S&T last spring.
With her long jump performance this past weekend, Reece is currently ranked ninth in NCAA Division III.
Fundora, Reece and the rest of the Gorloks will return to action this coming Saturday, March 23 as they travel down Big Bend Blvd. to compete in the WashU Mini Meet.
