Men's Tennis Closes SLIAC Play With Setback at Greenville

GREENVILLE, Ill. - Webster University closed out St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's tennis action here Wednesday evening as the Gorloks fell 8-1 to Greenville University at the Scott J. Burgess Tennis Complex on the Greenville campus.

With the setback, Webster falls to 11-6 overall and 2-2 in the league, while Greenville improves to 13-3 overall and 3-1 in the league.

In Wednesday's match, the Gorloks, who have now lost four of its last five matches with the only win being a 9-0 win this past Thursday against Fontbonne, were competitive against the Panthers as they won a total of 39 games in singles play.

Webster's lone win against Greenville came at No. 1 singles as junior Riley Muren (O'Fallon, Ill./Illinois-Springfield) picked up a straight set win over Greenville's Daniel Pieplow, 6-3, 6-2. The win was Muren's second straight at No. 1 singles and moved his record to 11-6 overall and 3-1 in SLIAC play on the year. In addition, Muren has now won 19 career singles matches and is 19-12 in his career in singles action.

The Gorloks also had another chance to pick up a win in singles as sophomore Tom Shutzman (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South) fell in a third set tiebreaker to Austin Burkhart at No. 4 singles. Shutzman opened the match by posting a 6-4 win in the first set, before Burkhurt rallied to win the second set, 6-2 to force a third set tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, the two players battled back-and-forth before ultimately Burkhurt would earn an 11-9 win. 

Greenville won the other four singles matches in straight sets, including freshman Tanner Haugen (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City) falling 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 singles to Tyler Blume. The loss dropped Haugen's record to 7-4 on the year overall and 1-2 in the SLIAC.

In doubles action, the Gorloks won a total of 7 games as Greenville won by 8-2 scores at both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, while the Panthers' No. 1 team of Pieplow and Zach Plocher earned an 8-3 win over Muren and sophomore Austin Nation (Oklahoma City, Okla./Purcell). Muren and Nation fell to 4-7 on the season and is now 0-2 in doubles play in league play.

The Gorloks will close out the regular season on Monday, April 22 as they travel to Fulton, Mo., to face Westminster (Mo.) College in a non-conference match beginning at 6 p.m.
