FULTON, Mo. - Webster University closed out the regular season portion of its 2019 schedule here Monday evening by posting a 7-2 non-conference victory over Westminster (Mo.) College at Elder Memorial Tennis Courts.
With the win, Webster closes the regular season with a 12-6 overall record and earns the No. 3 seed in this coming weekend's SLIAC Tournament, while Westminster falls to 0-8 overall and earns the No. 5 seed in the SLIAC Tournament.
The 12 wins are the most in a season for the Gorloks since winning a school record 19 matches and posting a 19-3 during the 2013 season.
In Wednesday's match, Webster's two losses came in doubles as the Blue Jays won at both the No. 1 and No. 3 spots in the doubles line-up, while Webster's No. 2 team of freshman
Parker Schaefer (Barnhart, Mo./Windsor) and sophomore
Tom Shutzman (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South) picked up an 8-2 win over Westminster's tandem of Giovanni Strickland and Brandon Rettke.
At No.1 doubles, junior
Riley Muren and freshman
Harsh Jaswal (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) fell 9-7, while sophomore Courtland Ragland (St. Louis, Mo./McKinley) and freshman
Sean Raglin (Barnhart, Mo./Windsor) fell 8-2 at the No. 3 spot.
Meanwhile, in singles play, Webster lost a total of 10 games en route to sweeping all singles matches for the fifth time this season and third time in their last seven matches.
Muren extended its win streak to three straight matches at the No. 1 singles spot as he defeated Phillip Udinyiwe, 6-0, 6-2 to improve to 12-6 on the season, while freshman
Justin Kohler (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) won his fourth straight match as he collected a 6-1, 6-1 win over Mike Ruis at No. 6 singles.
Webster posted two 6-0, 6-0 wins in singles against the Blue Jays as senior
Charlie McGhee (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) moved to 11-6 on the season following his shutout win at No. 3 singles over Strickland, while freshman
Tanner Haugen (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City) moved his record to 8-4 on the year following his shutout win at No. 4 singles over Rettke.
The Gorloks other two singles wins came from sophomore
Austin Nation (Oklahoma City, Okla./Purcell) at No. 2 singles over Joshua Udinyiwe, 6-3, 6-1 and junior
Nicolas Andrade (Quito, Ecuador/Francis Howell) evened his record at 6-6 with his 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles over Bryce Loney.
Webster will now turn its attention to the postseason as they face No. 2 seeded Greenville University in an 11 a.m. match on Friday, April 26 in the first round of the SLIAC Tournament at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park. During the regular season, Greenville picked up a 7-2 win over the Gorloks on April 17 at Greenville.
