RIVER FOREST, Ill. - Webster University opened its 2019 campaign here Friday evening by rallying from a 2-0 halftime deficit to post a 4-2 victory over Concordia-Chicago in non-conference regional action at Concordia Stadium.
The seven-time reigning St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Champions outshot the Cougars, 18-7, including a 12-3 edge on shots in the second half to win its third straight season opener and improved to 16-5 overall in season openers in program history.Â
Senior forward
Savannah Page (Sandy, Utah/Sandy) scored two goals and added an assist for a total of five points. Both of Page's goals came within 58 seconds of each other just a little under 18 minutes into the second half. The second goal, which was unassisted, tied the match at 2-all.Â
In addition to Page's two goals, senior forward
Melissa Kasper (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) added a goal and an assist, while sophomore forward
Jordan Lande (Sachse, Texas/Sachse) scored Webster's fourth and final goal.
Webster's four goals in the match came within an eight minute span in the second half to helped them to improve to 5-0 all-time against Concordia-Chicago.Â
CUC opened the scoring a little under 10 minutes into the match as Esmeralda Torres took a pass from Esther Annoreno for the first goal of the match against freshman
Taryn Banfield (Plano, Texas/Plano), who earned the start in goal for the Gorloks.
The Cougars pushed its lead to 2-0 a little less than 20 minutes into the match as Janette Moreno scored on an unassisted goal.Â
After being held to just six shots in the first half, Webster's offense got untracked in the second half as they took 12 shots, including seven of those shots coming on goal.Â
The Gorloks would get on the scoreboard in the 62nd minute thanks to a goal on a penalty kick by Page. Page would add her team's second goal 58 seconds later as she scored an unassisted goal. The two goals tied Page's single match career high.
Webster would take the lead in the 65th minute as Kasper tallied her 35th career goal to give the Gorloks a 3-2 lead. Kasper's goal was set by assists from both Page and senior midfielder
Olivia Osterhage. The assist by Osterhage was her 28th of her career and moved into a tie for 10th place on the school's all-time assist chart.Â
A little less than four minutes after Kasper's goal gave Webster the lead, Lande would push WU's lead to two goals in the 69th minute after taking a pass from Kasper. Kasper's assist was her 38th of her collegiate career.Â
The four goals in Friday's opener were the most goals scored by the Gorloks in a season opener since tallying four goals in a 4-1 win over Nebraska Wesleyan to open the 2011 season.Â
Kasper led Webster with four shots, while Page added three shots and Osterhage, Lande and sophomore midfielder
Ryleigh Grommet (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) each had two shots in the win.Â
Moreno paced the Cougars with two shots, while five other CUC players each had a shot in the loss.Â
While its offense scored four goals on Friday, the Gorloks defense also turned into a solid effort as after allowing two goals in the match's first 20 minutes, they didn't allow a goal over the final 70 minutes.Â
Senior
Abbey Mercer (Granite City, Ill.), who played all 45 minutes in the second half, picked up the win as she didn't allow a goal and made one save. Banfield played the first half and allowed two goals and made two saves.Â
