Women's Tennis Falls at Quincy in Season Opener

QUINCY, Ill. - Webster University played its first dual match of the 2019-20 season here Saturday afternoon at Reservoir Park and the Gorloks fell 7-2 to NCAA Division II member Quincy University. 

Saturday's match marked the debut of Carl Walker as Webster's interim head coach for the fall campaign. Walker had spent the previous five seasons as a volunteer assistant coach for the Gorloks. 
 
In Saturday's match, the teams began with doubles play as the Webster lost two of three in doubles, but picked its lone doubles win at the No. 2 spot as sophomore Navone Armstrong (St. Louis, Mo./McCluer North) and freshman Elizabeth Hill (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) teamed up together to defeat QU's tandem of Makaela Hampton and Annie McGinnis, 6-1. Hill was playing her first career collegiate tennis match, while Armstrong was a Second-Team All-St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection last season at No. 3 doubles. 

While WU's No. 2 doubles team, the Gorloks other two teams are junior Maggie Federhofer (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran North) and freshman Erin Brezovar (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) fell at the No. 1 spot, 6-2 and the No. 3 team of sophomore Emma Ferguson (Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan) and junior Alyssa Tourville (Belleville, Ill./Kaskaskia) fell 6-1. 

Meanwhile, in singles action, Webster lone win came at the No. 2 spot as freshman Katarina Serbentas (Iron River, Mich./West Iron County) picked up an impressive 6-4, 7-5 win over Hampton in her first career collegiate match.

Overall in singles action, Webster won a total of 23 games as along Serbentas at No. 2 singles, Brezovar won a total of three games as she fell 6-2, 6-1 to QU's Nicolo Lao, while Tourville won five games at No. 5 singles against QU's Abby Moore as Moore won 6-4, 6-1. 

At No. 1 singles, Ferderhofer fell 6-0, 6-1 to Laila Leist-Alston, while Ferguson lost 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot to Marta Caballero and Armstrong fell 6-0, 6-0 to McGinnis at the No. 3 spot. 

Webster will continue its fall season next Saturday, Sept. 7 as they host Anderson (Ind.) University for a 10 a.m. match at the Webster Groves Tennis Center.
