Women's Tennis Drops Home Opener to Anderson

WEBSTER GROVES - Webster University opened the home portion of its 2019-20 women's tennis season here Saturday at Webster Groves Tennis Center and the Gorloks suffered a 9-0 setback to Anderson (Ind.) University.

With the setback, Webster falls to 0-2 on the season, while Anderson improves to 3-0 on the young season.

In Saturday's match, the teams began with doubles action as the Gorloks dropped all three doubles matches, but made Anderson work for the sweep as sophomore Emma Ferguson (Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan) and junior Alyssa Tourville (Belleville, Ill./Kaskaskia) made Anna Creech and Jordan Roper work for their win at No. 3 doubles as the Webster tandem fell 8-6.

The Gorloks other two doubles teams - junior Maggie Federhofer (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) and freshman Erin Brezovar (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) at No. 1 and sophomore Navone Armstrong (St. Louis, Mo./McCluer North) and freshman Elizabeth Hill (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) at No. 2  suffered indentical 8-3 setbacks.

Meanwhile, in singles play, the Gorloks won a total of 32 games, including Brezovar winning 16 of those games at No. 2 singles.

In fact, Brezovar's match at the No. 2 spot against Allison Newman was the match of the day. In that match, Brezovar won the first set, 6-3, but Newman was able to rally and win the second set, 6-1 to force a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, the two players battled back-and-forth all the way to the end as Newman would eventually prevail 11-9.

Tourville won seven games at the No. 5 singles spot against Creech as would post a 6-4, 6-3 win.

At the No. 1 spot, freshman Katarina Serbentas (Iron River, Mich./West Iron County) would fall in straight sets by identical 6-2 scores to Katrina Berban. Serbantas picked up one of Webster's two wins in last Saturday's season opener at Quincy University as she won at No. 2 singles.

Armstrong fell 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles to Roper and Federhofer played at No. 3 singles and fell 6-3, 6-0 to Jasmine Blair.

The only singles match Webster didn't win at least one point came at the No. 4 spot as Ferguson fell 6-0, 6-0 to Claire Miller.

Webster will continue its fall season next Saturday, Sept. 14 as they travel to Oakland City, Ind., for an 11 a.m. Central match at Oakland City University.
