OAKLAND CITY, Ind. - Webster University opened the home portion of its 2019-20 women's tennis season here Saturday afternoon as the Gorloks collected a hard-fought 8-1 victory over Oakland City University in a non-conference match at the OCU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
The win over Oakland City was Webster's first win of the season as they improved to 1-2 on the season and it was also the first win for interim head coach
Carl Walker. OCU fell to 0-1 on the year as Saturday's match was their first of the season.
In Saturday's match, the Gorloks opened by winning two of the three doubles matches to take an early 2-1 lead in the match.Â
Freshman
Erin Brezovar (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and senior
Maggie Federhofer (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) picked up a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles, while freshman
Lauren Denny (O'Fallon, Mo./Francis Howell) and freshman
Lauren Bodlovic (Missoula, Mont./Loyola Sacred Heart) picked up a 6-0 win at the No. 3 doubles spot. Denny and Bodlovic were playing their first career collegiate tennis match on Saturday.
OCU's lone win in the match came in a tiebreaker at the No. 2 doubles spot as Kaleigh Helm and Hannah Wilson picked up a 7-6 (7-3) win over WU's No. 2 team of sophomore
Navone Armstrong (St. Louis, Mo./McCluer North) and freshman
Elizabeth Hill (Allegan, Mich./Allegan).
Meanwhile, in singles play, the Gorloks won all six matches and won a total of 73 of the 98 games that were played and WU won all six matches in straight sets.Â
At the No. 1 spot, freshman
Katarina Serbentas (Iron River, Mich./West Iron County) picked up a 6-0, 6-3 win over Audrey Wilson. Serbentas is now 2-1 this season in singles play.Â
Brezovar picked up her first singles win on Saturday as she defeated Morgan Hamilton, 6-0, 7-5 at the No. 2 spot, while Federhofer earned her first singles win of the year with a 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot over Hannah Wilson.Â
Sophomore
Emma Ferguson (Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan) earned a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles over Helm.Â
Junior
Alyssa Tourville (Belleville, Ill./Kaskaskia College) picked up her first career collegiate singles win with her 6-0, 6-3 win at the No. 5 spot over Jailyn Brantley and Armstrong picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win at the No. 6 spot over Keaton Whetstone.Â
The Gorloks will look to make it two straight wins this coming Tuesday, Sept. 17 as the Gorloks host Fontbonne University for a 6 p.m. non-conference match at the Webster Groves Tennis Center.Â
