Women's Soccer Posts 3-0 Home Shutout Over Rose-Hulman

FENTON, Mo. - Webster University continued its three-match homestand here Saturday afternoon by posting a 3-0 shutout victory over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in a non-conference women's soccer match at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.

With the victory, Webster improves to 5-2-0 overall on the season and extends its win streak to two matches, while Rose-Hulman falls to 3-4-0 on the season. In addition, the victory also extends WU's home win streak in regular season matches to seven straight dating to last season.

In Saturday's match, Webster held a 15-14 edge in shots, but had an 8-4 edge in shots on goal and was able to put three of those shots on goal into the net to record its second consecutive shutout on the homestand. 

The Gorloks opened the scoring in the 23rd minute of the match as senior midfielder Savannah Page (Sandy, Utah/Jordan) scored from 16 yards out off an assist from senior midfielder Olivia Osterhage (Eureka, Mo./Eureka). The goal by Page was her team leading eighth of the season. 

Senior forward Melissa Kasper (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) got into the scoring act late in the 71st minute of the match as she connected on a shot from 16 yards out to give the Gorloks a 2-0 lead. Kasper's goal was set up by an assist from sophomore forward Jordan Lande (Sachse, Texas/Sachse). The goal by Kasper was her fifth of the season and 39th of her career, which is eighth on the school's career chart. 

WU would complete the scoring nearly two minutes after Kasper's goal as Lande connected from about six yards out for her seventh goal of the season. Lande's goal came off an assist from Page, who has now recorded a team-best 20 points on the year. 

The Fightin' Engineers best chance for a goal came in the 80th minute, but freshman goalkeeper Taryn Banfield (Plano, Texas/Plano East) came out of the goal and made a diving stop on a shot taken by Sidney Hohl to preserve the shutout. The save by Banfield was her fourth and final save of the match.

Page took four of WU's 15 shots, while Kasper, Lande and sophomore midfielder Ryleigh Grommet (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) each had two shots in the win. Both of Kasper's shots were on goal in the match. 

In the match, nine different Gorloks recorded at least one shot and seven of those nine players had at least one shot on goal.

Maggie Sheerin led RHIT with four shots, while Jessica Wells and Maddy Tweeten each had three shots in the loss. 

Banfield (4-1-0) earned the win in goal for the Gorloks as she tallied her second straight shutout and didn't allow a goal, while recording four saves. Banfield hasn't allowed a goal in 180 consecutive minutes of action.

Katie Demert (1-3-0) took the loss in net for RHIT as she recorded five saves and allowed three goals in 90 minutes of action.

The Gorloks will conclude its three-match homestand on Wednesday, Sept. 25 as they host ninth-ranked Washington University in St. Louis for a 6 p.m. non-conference match at WWT Soccer Park.
