Women's Soccer Plays Hard Fought Battle at Home Against Sixth-Ranked WashU

FENTON, Mo. - Webster University went toe-to-toe here Wednesday evening for 90 minutes with sixth-ranked Washington University at St. Louis in women's soccer action at World Wide Technology Soccer Park and the Gorloks fell 2-0 to the Bears in non-conference action.

With the setback, Webster fell to 5-3-0 overall, while WashU improves to 8-1-0 overall on the year. The setback snapped a two-match win streak for the Gorloks and was WU's first setback at home this year as the Gorloks are now 3-1 at home. 

Wednesday's match featured just two goals and they came in the first 30 minutes of the match and then the two teams kept the ball in the middle of the field the remainder of the match as their were just six shots on goal after halftime. 

Ariana Miles put the Bears on the board in the 11th minute as she connected on a shot from 15 yards out off a pass from Taylor Cohen and in the 30th minute, Ellie Moreland gave WashU a 2-0 lead as she found the net from 24 yards out off a pass from Riley Alvarez. 

In the 36th minute, senior midfielder Savannah Page (Sandy, Utah/Jordan) put a shot on goal, but Emma Greenfield made a save to keep the score 2-0. 

In fact, both of WU's two shots on goal in the opening half came from Page. 

With under a minute left in the match, senior Melissa Kasper (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) put a shot on goal, but Greenfield saved the ball to preserve the shutout. 

For the match, Webster, who is ranked eighth in this week's latest United Soccer Coaches Central Region poll, held a 52-48 edge in possession against the Bears, who have won six matches in row following Wednesday's win.

Webster recorded seven shots on the night and the seven shots were the third most allowed this season by the Bears.

Page, Kasper and sophomore midfielder Ryleigh Grommet (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) each had two shots for the Gorloks. 

Freshman goalkeeper Taryn Banfield (Plano, Texas/Plano East) played all 90 minutes in the net and finished with a career high 14 saves and allowed two goals. Banfield's record fell to 4-2-0 on the year. 

Emma Greenfield (8-1-1) also played 90 minutes in net for the Bears and recorded three saves. 

The Gorloks will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 28 as they travel to Anderson, Ind., for an 11 a.m. EDT time match against Anderson University. The Anderson match will mark the final regular season non-conference match of the 2019 season for the Gorloks.
