Women's Tennis Concludes Fall Season With Home Setback to Truman State

WEBSTER GROVES - Webster University closed out the fall portion of its 2019-20 women's tennis season here Saturday afternoon by suffering an 8-1 setback to NCAA Division II foe Truman State at the Webster Groves Tennis Center.

With the setback, Webster falls to 2-3 on the season, while Truman State improves to 2-1 on the year. The loss to Truman State snapped Webster's two match win streak.

In Saturday's match, the two teams began with doubles and two of the three doubles matches went down to the wire as TSU won all three of them to take a 3-0 lead in the match.

Perhaps the doubles match of the day came at the No. 1 spot as junior Maggie Federhofer (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran North) and freshman Erin Brezovar (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) battled point-for-point with TSU's Alex Rogers and Morgan Eby, before the TSU duo posted an 8-6 win.

At No. 3 doubles, freshmen Emily Casey (Duluth, Minn./Marshall) and Lauren Denny (O'Fallon, Mo./Francis Howell) were playing their first doubles match of the season and they fell 8-5 to TSU's duo of Julia Fangman and Hannah Gross.

Truman's No. 2 doubles team of Caprice Huitron and Kennidy Shirey won 8-3 over WU's tandem of freshman Elizabeth Hill (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) and junior Alyssa Tourville (Belleville, Ill./Kaskaskia College).

Meanwhile, in singles action, Webster's lone point in the match came at the No. 3 spot as Federhofer picked up a straight set win over Huitron, 6-2, 6-1 for her two singles win of the season to move her record to 2-2 on the year.

The Gorloks had another chance at picking up in singles at the No. 2 spot as Brezovar forced a third set tiebreker against Eby. At No. 2 singles, Eby opened by picking up a 6-3 win in the opening set, before Brevozar rallied to earn a 6-2 win in the second set to force a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, both players battled back-and-forth before Eby ultimately prevailed 11-9 to earn the win.

At the No. 4 spot, sophomore Emma Ferguson (Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan) lost 6-4, 6-3 to TSU's Shirey, while Hill fell by identical 6-3 scores at the No. 6 singles spots to Rachel Shelly.

Truman's other two singles wins came at the No. 1 and No. 5 spots as freshman Katarina Serbentas (Iron River, Mich./West Iron County) fell 6-0, 6-2 to Rogers at No. 1 singles and sophomore Navone Armstrong (St. Louis, Mo./McCluer North) fell by identical 6-0 scores at No. 5 singles to Fangman.

The Gorloks will return to the court in 2020 as they open its 2019-20 spring season schedule on Feb. 23 at home against Saint Mary's (Minn.) at 8 a.m.
