Women's Basketball Tops 80 Point Mark for Fourth Straight Game, Wins at Home over Blackburn

WEBSTER GROVES, Mo. - Webster University scored 80 points in its fourth consecutive game here Wednesday evening as the Gorloks collected an 84-46 women's basketball victory over Blackburn College in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Grant Gymnasium.

The Gorloks, who are now 50-4 when they score 80 or more points since 2008-09, have now tallied 80 or more points in four straight games for the second consecutive season as they also tallied four straight games of scoring 80 or more points from Dec. 1-Dec. 7, 2018.

With the victory, Webster extends its win streak to four consecutive games and improves its record to 8-6 overall and 6-1 in the SLIAC, while Blackburn falls to 4-9 overall and 2-5 in the league.

In the win over the Beavers, six Gorloks scored at least six points and 13 of the 14 players that saw action scored at least two points in the contest, including sophomore guard Hannah Cottrell (Steelville, Mo./Steelville) leading the way with a season high 15 points in 16 minutes of action.

For the game, none of Webster's starters played more than 19 minutes and in fact, 12 Gorloks played at least 10 minutes in the game, including freshman guard Tiffany Sakamoto (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph Academy) and junior guard Kiara Rhines (Glendale, Ariz./Ironwood) playing 22 and 20 minutes respectively.

In addition to the 15 points from Cottrell, junior forward Darieana Hunter (Norman, Okla./Norman) added 11 points and six rebounds, while sophomore forward Addison Beussink (Jackson, Mo./Saxony Lutheran) had nine points, five rebounds and a career high tying three blocks. Freshman forward Julie Baudendistel (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) tallied eight points, while senior guard Jaysea Morgan (Fisk, Mo./Twin Rivers) chipped in with seven points to push her career scoring total to 842 points. Morgan is now just 152 points shy of joining the 1,000 Point Club.

The Gorloks offense also scored 20 more points in three of the four periods for the third straight game as they tallied 29 points in the first period, 22 points in the second period and 20 points in the third period.

While its offense was strong once again on Wednesday, Webster's defense was also strong against Blackburn as they held the Beavers to 11 or less points in three periods and forced 35 turnovers that led 44 points for the Gorloks. The Gorloks also collected a season high 19 steals, including five from sophomore guard Lauryn Freeman (Fort Worth, Texas/Timber Creek).

After Blackburn scored the first points of the game on a lay-up from Savannah Kruse just 51 seconds into the first period, the Gorloks used a 15-2 run capped by five straight points from Baudendistel to push out to a 15-4 lead with 5:42 left in the period. Following a basket by Callista Francis that stopped WU's run, the Gorloks would close the period on an 11-4 run to hold a 26-10 lead after the first period. In the period, Cottrell scored nine of her team high 15 points and the Gorloks forced 12 turnovers that led to 14 points.

Blackburn would open the second period on an 8-7 run to drop Webster's lead to 33-18 just a little over two-plus minutes into the period. The Gorloks would answer with an 18-3 run over the final seven minutes of the period to take a 51-21 lead at the half.

In the third period, Blackburn shot 73 percent from the floor and 50 percent from the 3-point line and committed six turnovers as they scored 18 points, but the Gorloks scored 20 points in the period and led 71-39 heading into the final period. After the Gorloks opened the final period by scoring the first points to push its lead 75-39, the Beavers would score five of the next seven points to pull within 77-44. Webster, though, would score seven of the next nine points, including pushing its lead to a game high 38 points following a lay-up from sophomore forward Scarlett Anosier (Boynton Beach, Fla./Grandview Prep) with 1:36 left in the game. Anosier's lay-up gave the Gorloks an 84-46 lead.

The Gorloks haven't won at Eureka since Jan. 5, 2013, as Webster has lost six straight games on Eureka's home court.
