EUREKA, Ill. – Webster University Women's Basketball scored a season high 90 points and held a 57-29 edge on the glass here Saturday afternoon en route to posting an impressive 90-70 victory over Eureka College in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Christine Bonati Bollwinkle Arena.
The win snaps a six game losing skid for the Gorloks on Eureka's home court and extends its win streak to five consecutive games as Webster is now 9-6 overall and remains atop the league standings with a 7-1 record.
Saturday's win was Webster's first at Eureka since earning an 87-83 overtime win over the Red Devils on Jan. 5, 2013. The Gorloks are now 6-10 all-time at Eureka. The 90 points are the most scored by the Gorloks at Eureka in the series. In addition, the 90 points are the most scored by the Gorloks in a game since tallying 97 points last season at Principia.
With its 90 point game on Saturday, Webster has now scored 80 or more points in all five games in 2020 and in all eight games in league play. Additionally, Webster is 51-4 when scoring 80 or more points in game since
Jordan Olufson became Webster's coach in 2008.
Webster, who has now won seven straight league games since falling 89-82 in overtime in its league opener at home to Spalding on Dec. 5, scored 20-plus points in the first three periods to lead 72-49 heading into the final period. The Gorloks have scored 20 or points in 12 of its last 16 periods played.
Senior guard
Jaysea Morgan (Fisk, Mo./Twin Rivers) paced five Gorloks in double figures as she finished with 17 points and pushed her career total 859, which is 12th on the school's all-time scoring chart. In addition to Morgan, sophomore forward
Addison Beussink (Jackson, Mo./Saxony Lutheran) and sophomore guard
Lauryn Freeman (Fort Worth, Texas/Timber Creek) each had 15 points, while junior guard
Naomi Johnson (St. Louis, Mo./Greenville University) added 14 points and sophomore guard
Hannah Cottrell (Steelville, Mo./Steelville) tallied 11 points.
Eureka, who fell to 9-6 overall and 5-3 in the league, was paced offensively 17 points and eight rebounds from Olivia Falls. In addition to Falls, Ashley Harfst added 15 points, while Whitney Bozarth chipped in with 11 points and Ja'Keesha Hawkins tallied 10.
The 57 rebounds by the Gorloks were the most in a game since pulling down a school record 64 boards last season at home against Principia. Lesding the way on the boards for Webster was Freeman as along with scoring a career high 15 points, she pulled down a career high nine boards. Along with Freeman, Johnson had a career high seven boards, while Beussink, Cottrell and Morgan each had six boards. Webster collected 25 of those 57 boards on the offensive glass.
For the game, Webster shot 45 percent from the field and 83 percent at the free throw line, but was just 3-for-12 (25 percent) from the 3-point line. Webster entered the game leading the league in 3-point shooting at 36.6 percent.
In Saturday's contest, the Gorloks never trailed as they jumped out to a 7-0 lead just 81 seconds into the game and led by as much as 28 points following a lay-up by Morgsn just 75 seconds into the fourth period. Morgan's lay-up gave the Gorloks a 77-49 lead.
After scoring 24 points in the opening period to hold a 24-17 lead, the Gorloks would score another 24 points in the second period to take 48-36 lead at the half.
The Gorloks shot 58 percent from the field in the third period and outscored the Red Devils, 24-13 in the period to lead 23 points at 72-49 heading into the final period. In the third period, Freeman, Johnson and freshman forward
Julie Baudendistel (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) combined to each score six points in the period to pace the Gorloks.
After scoring the first five points of the fourth period to push its lead to 28 points, the Red Devils would close the period by scoring 21 of the final 34 points to set the final margin.
Both teams struggled to take of the basketball as they combined to record 46 turnovers in the game as Webster had 24 turnovers, while Eureka finished with 22 turnovers. The Gorloks held a 27-22 edge in points off turnovers in the win.
Eureka finished the game shooting 40 percent from the field, but was held to 17 percent (3-for-18) shooting from long distance and made 17 of its 21 free throws (81 percent).
The Gorloks will look to make it six consecutive wins this coming Wednesday, Jan. 22 as the Gorloks conclude the first half of SLIAC play with a 5:30 p.m. home contest in Grant Gymnasium against Iowa Wesleyan (2-12 overall, 2-5 SLIAC). The Tigers play a rescheduled game on Monday at Greenville, before traveling to Webster on Wednesday.
