Men's Basketball Tops Century Mark in Home Win Over Greenville

WEBSTER GROVES - For the seventh time in the last 10 games, Webster University Men's Basketball once again came out on top against the "System" run by Greenville University as the Gorloks scored a season high 125 points en route to earning an impressive 125-121 victory in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Grant Gymnasium.

Since Greenville adopted the "System" offensive scheme prior to the beginning of the 2015-16 season, Webster has posted a 7-3 record over the Panthers, including winning three of the last four games in the series overall with the only setback being a 98-97 loss earlier this season at Greenville.

With the victory, Webster improves to 10-8 overall and moves to 9-2 in the SLIAC, while Greenville falls to 8-10 overall and 7-4 in the league. In addition, the victory was also Webster's 19th consecutive at home in league play since suffering a 78-61 loss to Westminster (Mo.) College on Jan. 20, 2018.

In the win over Greenville, Webster set season highs for scoring (125), made field goals (54), field goal percentage (65.1 percent) and assists (38) and tied a season high with 83 field goal attempts. The 125 points are sixth most in school history and the most points scored in a game since tallying 128 points last season against Greenville, while the 54 made field goals are second most in a game in school history and the 65.1 field goal percentage and 38 assists are both third best in a game in school history.

The 38 assists were just four short of the school's single game record of 42 assists, which was recorded at Greenville last season.

Six Gorloks scored in double figures against the Panthers, including two scoring 20 or more points as junior forward Rodson Etienne (West Palm Beach, Fla./Royal Palm Beach) tallied a season high 31 points, including scoring 27 of those points after halftime. In addition to Etienne, senior guard Jordan Clay (St. Louis, Mo./Blackburn College) scored a career high 26 points and added 10 rebounds for his first career double-double and also added seven assists.

The other four double-digit scorers were senior forward Enrique Tankins (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland) added 17 points and 12 rebounds for his school record 19th career double-doubles, while freshman guard Wynne Brown, Jr. (Memphis, Tenn./Bartlett) had 16 points and a career high six assists. Senior guard Josh Johnson (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton) tallied 12 points and a season high seven assists and freshman forward Javane Nugent (Sunrise, Fla./Piper) posted season highs of 10 points and five rebounds.

Tankins' double-double, which was his seventh this season, bettered the old school mark of 18, which was set by Nigel Wilcox, who had 18 double-doubles from 2017-19.

Wednesday's game was a tale of two halves as the Gorloks shot 63 percent from the field and 88 percent from the free throw line and scored 57 points to hold a 57-41 lead at the half, while Greenville scored 80 points and hit 12 3-pointers in the final 20 minutes of the game.

After leading by as much as 17 points just a litlte over two minutes into the second half follwing a lay-up by Brown, Jr., that gave Webster a 68-51 advantage, the Gorloks watched Greenville rally with a 33-17 run keyed by a combined 12 points from Marvin Bateman and Sontiago Grady to cut Webster's lead to 85-84 with 11:29 left in the game.

That run sparked the Gorloks as they used a 7-0 run capped by a lay-up from Etienne to give Webster a 92-84 lead, but Greenville would respond once again as they used a 12-2 run, including tying the game at 92 on a trey from Bateman, to take a 96-94 lead with 8:26 remaining.

Three straight lay-ups by Nugent and a lay-up by Etienne gave the Gorloks a 102-98 lead with 7:06 left, but the Panthers would answer with a 14-9 run over a span of nearly four minutes to take a 112-111 lead with 3:17 left in the contest. That would be Greenville's final lead as the Gorloks retook the lead on a lay-up by Etienne with 3:04 remaining and that lay-up ignited an 11-8 run by the Gorloks to push out to a 123-119 lead with 36 seconds left.

After Riley Simmons scored on a lay-up with 24 seconds left to pull the Panthers within two at 123-121, Tankins and Brown., Jr., would each hit a free throw in the final 10 seconds to seal the victory.

Grady led Greenville with 24 points, while Eric Williams added 20 points and five rebounds and Bateman scored 17 points off the bench. In addition to those three players, two others scored in double figures as Simmons tallied 16 points and seven rebounds and Henry Johnson had 11 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals in the loss.

The two teams played fairly even in the opening four-plus minutes until the Panthers used a 13-6 run to turn a 12-12 tie into a 25-18 lead with 12:18 left in the opening half. Webster, though, responded with a 17-2 run that began with two free throws from freshman forward Jadis Smith (Little Rock, Ark./Estem Charter) and was capped by a lay-up from Etienne. Etienne's lay-up gave Webster a 35-27 lead.

After Williams drilled a trey just seven seconds after Etienne's lay-up to drop WU's lead to 35-30, the Gorloks used a 10-0 run to push in front 45-30 with 4:36 left in the opening half. The Panthers would then score five straight points to push within 45-35, before Webster closed the half on a 12-6 run to take a 57-41 halftime lead.

Webster finished with a 52-48 edge on the glass and held a 100-46 advantage in points in the paint.

The teams combined for 51 turnovers as Webster committed a season high 29 turnovers that led to 38 points for Greenville, while the Panthers had 22 turnovers that led to 29 Webster points and collected 21 steals. Webster had 14 steals on the night.

Greenville finished the game shooting 41 percent from the field, 30 percent (17-for-56) from the 3-point line and 88 percent (14-for-16) from the free throw line.

Webster will look to make it four straight wins this coming Saturday, Feb. 1 as the Gorloks travel to Jacksonville, Ill., for a 3 p.m. game at MacMurray College (6-12 overall, 4-7 SLIAC). The Gorloks earned a hard-fought 93-90 overtime win over the Highlanders at home on Dec. 14.
