Men's Basketball Earns Second Straight Regular Season SLIAC Title, Runs Past Eureka on Senior Night

WEBSTER GROVES - Webster University concluded the home portion of its 2019-20 regular season men's basketball schedule here Wednesday evening by rallying for an 88-79 win over Eureka College on Senior Night at Grant Gymnasium to earn its second consecutive St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season championship.

The Gorloks, who have now won a league-best 10 regular season titles, improved its overall record to 16-8 and its league record to 15-2 heading into Saturday's regular season finale at Iowa Wesleyan. Along with earning its second consecutive regular season title, Wednesday's victory extended Webster's win streak to nine straight games and its home win streak in SLIAC play to 21 consecutive games dating to the 2017-18 season.

Prior to Wednesday's game, the Gorloks honored its five member senior class in a pregame ceremony as this year's seniors are guard Blake Ferrell (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway South), guard Jordan Clay (St. Louis, Mo./Blackburn College), guard Aron Hopp (Lincoln, Ill./Lincoln College), guard Josh Johnson (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton) and forward Enrique Tankins (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland).

Against Eureka, who fell to 15-9 overall and 10-7 in the league, the Gorloks shot 63 percent from the field and 44 percent from the 3-point line in the second half as they scored 52 points to rally from a 46-36 halftime deficit and snap a three game losing skid to Eureka.

In Wednesday's win, the five seniors combined for 64 of Webster's 88 points, including four of those five seniors tallying double figures as Tankins led the way with 20 points and added 14 rebounds for his fourth consecutive and 11th double-double of the season, while Johnson added 19 points and seven boards, Clay tallied 12 points and Hopp had 11 points and a career high seven rebounds.

The second half rally was keyed by the play of junior forward Rodson Etienne (West Palm Beach, Fla./Royal Palm Beach) and two seniors - Hopp and Clay as those three players combined to score 37 of Webster's 52 points after halftime. Etienne scored 16 of those 37 points, while Clay had 12 and Hopp added nine, including hitting four free throws in the final 29 seconds of the game to seal the win.

Webster, who has posted a 30-4 record in league play over the last two seasons, opened the second half on an 18-8 run to cut a 10 point deficit to a tie at 54 with 13:18 left in the game. The second half opening run was keyed by seven points from Etienne.

The Red Devils, though, would retake the lead at 57-54 on its next trip down the court thanks to a trey from Jordan Dehm with 12:57 remaining in the contest. Webster would answer with 15-4 run to push out to a 69-61 lead with 8:22 remaining.

Eureka, who took home the SLIAC Tournament title last season with a 70-69 win over the Gorloks at Grant Gymnasium, would score seven of the next eight points to pull within 70-68. That would be as close as the Red Devils would get as Gorloks responded with a 10-3 run capped by trey from Clay to push its lead to 80-71 with 3:55 remaining.

The Gorloks lead wouldn't fall below five points the remainder of the game, including the Gorloks hitting six consecutive free throws over the final 30 seconds to cap the scoring.

Ian Milsteadt paced Eureka with a game high 27 points, including tallying 17 of those points in the first half. In addition to Milsteadt, Dehm added 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Austin Juergens tallied 11 points and Dakota Bennington finished with 10 points as he was just 3-for-13 from the field. Bennington entered the game averaging a league-leading 24.7 points per game.

For the game, Webster shot 51 percent from the field and 39 percent from the 3-point line and was 15-for-20 (75 percent) at the free throw line, while Eureka shot 38 percent from the floor and 36 percent from the 3-point line. The Red Devils were also 14-for-16 (88 percent) at the free throw line.

Webster held a 42-41 edge on the boards as along with Tankins' 14 boards, Johnson and Hopp each had seven boards, while the two teams combined for 19 turnovers as Webster had 10 turnovers and Eureka added nine.

Despite committing just nine turnovers, the Gorloks were able to score 16 points off of those Eureka turnovers.

The Gorloks will close the 2019-20 regular season on Saturday, Feb. 22 as Webster travels to Mount Pleasant, Iowa, for a 3 p.m. game against Iowa Wesleyan. The Gorloks picked up an 80-75 win over the Tigers at home on Jan. 22.
