BELLEVILLE, Ill. - Webster University Men's Tennis once again showed how important its depth is this season as the Gorloks used that depth to post another hard-fought 5-4 victory here Sunday over Knox College at the St. Clair Tennis Center.
"The depth at the bottom of our line-up was clutch and helped us pull out the win today," Webster first year head coach
John Black said following Sunday's win.
With Sunday's win, Webster improves to 2-0 on the season, while Knox falls to 1-2 on the year.
In Sunday's match, the Gorloks received three more outstanding doubles matches as they won two of the three doubles matches with Webster's wins coming at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots.
At No. 2 doubles, junior
Austin Nation (Oklahoma City, Okla./Purcell) and freshman
Justin Weaver (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit) won 8-3 over Knox's tandem of Brad Newland and Jared Schwarz, while at No. 3 doubles, senior
Nicolas Andrade (Quito, Ecuador/Francis Howell) and sophomore
Harsh Jaswal (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) teamed up to post an 8-4 win over Knox's tandem of Dobbin Pine and Eric Xu.
Knox's lone win in doubles came at the No. 1 spot as Webster's No. 1 team of senior
Riley Muren (O'Fallon, Ill./UIS) and sophomore
Tanner Haugen (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City) fell 8-4.
Leading 2-1 in the match, Webster used an impressive 6-0, 6-2 win at the No. 1 singles spot from Muren to give the Gorloks a 3-1 lead. Muren's win are No. 1 singles over Arthur Batista was perhaps his best match of the year to date, according to first year head coach
John Black.
Knox would win the next three points in singles as Ajay Gustafstonm, Newland and Schwarz picked up wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles respectively to give Knox a 4-3 lead.
Jaswal tied the match up a 4-all following his impressive 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles over Xu and the Gorloks earned the win thanks to Haugen's hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 5 spot over Pine.
It marked the second straight match that it came down to Haugen's singles match as Haugen picked up straight sets win on Saturday to help the Gorloks to its 5-4 win over Hendrix in its 2020 season opener.
"Tanner and Harsh really came up clutch today in singles," added Black.
The Gorloks will next be in action on Saturday, Feb. 29 as they travel to Elsah, Ill., for 12:30 p.m. match against Simpson College. The match will be held at Principia College.
