HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Webster University improved its men's tennis record to 5-3 on the season as the Gorloks continued play in the 2020 Spring TennisFest here Wednesday by posting an 8-1 victory over Gettysburg College at the Chaplin Tennis Center.

With the Wednesday's win, Webster is now 2-1 in the Spring TennisFest with one more match remaining tomorrow morning against Penn State-Behrend.

In Wednesday's match, the Gorloks opened by sweeping all three doubles matches for just the second time this season.

Two of the three doubles matches were tightly contested as sophomore Tanner Haugen (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City) and freshman Justin Weaver (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit) picked up a 9-7 win at No. 2 doubles, while sophomore Harsh Jaswal (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) and sophomore Zach Stevens (St. Louis, Mo./Fontbonne) won 8-5 at No. 3 doubles.

Webster's No. 1 team of senior Riley Muren (O'Fallon, Ill./Ill.-Springfield) and junior Austin Nation (Oklahoma City, Okla./Purcell) improved to 2-1 on the season as they won 8-1 at No. 1 doubles.

"We got off to a strong start in doubles led to a sweep and a big 3-0 lead in the match," Webster head coach John Black said. "It was a great match today for us."

Meanwhile, in singles action, the Gorloks won five of the six singles matches, including winning two of those matches in third set tiebreakers.

Muren continued his strong play at the No. 1 singles spot as he picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win over Gettysburg's No. 1 player, Zach LaChance, to improve to 8-0 in dual matches this season and earn his 28th career victory in singles, which is seventh on the school's all-time list. Muren has a 9-2 overall record in singles on the year.

Webster's other two straight set wins in singles came at the No. 3 spot as Weaver won, 6-4, 6-2 and Jaswal won at the No. 5 spot, 6-2, 6-4.

The two matches that went to tiebreakers came at the No. 4 and No. 6 spots.

At the No. 4 spot, Haugen defeated Matt Rau, 10-4, in the tiebreaker after the two players split the first two matches - 6-3 by Haugen and 6-4 by Rau, while at the No. 6 spot, sophomore Justin Kohler (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) defeated Clark Lovejoy, 10-5 in the tiebreaker to win the match. Kohler and Lovejoy split their first two sets - 6-2 by Lovejoy and 6-3 by Kohler.
