NCAA Announces Cancellation of All Winter and Spring Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - On Thursday, NCAA President Mark Emmet and the Board of Governors announced the cancellation of all remaining winter and spring NCAA Championships at three levels of NCAA competition. This includes the Division III Indoor Track Championships that were scheduled for this weekend in Winston-Salem, N.C.

With the cancellation of all NCAA Championships, including the Division III Indoor Track Championships, that means that Webster student-athletes, junior Jacob Ridenhour (Jerseyville, Ill./Jerseyville) and senior Daisha Reece (Norman, Okla./Rogers State) will not get the opportunity to compete for an individual national title. Ridenhour was scheduled to compete in the both the men's 60 and 200-meter dashes, while qualified for nationals in the women's long jump.

Here is the complete statement in its entirety from NCAA President Mark Emmert on the cancellation of the remaining winter and all of the spring NCAA Championship events.

"Today, NCAA President Mark Emmert and the Board of Governors canceled the Division I men's and women's 2020 basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships. This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities."

Despite the cancellation of all the winter and spring championship events at the NCAA level for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year, all other future Webster athletic events are still scheduled to occur as planned, including the Webster baseball teams final three games in Florida on its spring break trip this weekend. Webster University recognizes that the conditions surrounding the coronavirus situation are fluid and can change rapidly. Webster officials continue to monitor the situation closely and are conferring with other conference peers to evaluate the conditions in the interest of the safety of our athletes and our community.

More information will made public once it is available.
