HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Webster University Women's Tennis opened play in the Spring TennisFest here Sunday by posting an 8-1 victory over Nazareth College at the Chaplin Park Tennis Center.
With the win, Webster improves its record to 4-5 overall on the season, while Nazareth falls to 6-7.
"What a great way for us to start the spring break tournament. I thought we came put fired up and played aggressive doubles and then continued that strong play into singles," Webster head coach
John Black said following the match.
The Gorloks, who are scheduled to play four matches in five days at the event in Hilton Head, opened Sunday's mach by sweeping all three doubles matches for the third time this season.
In doubles, the Gorloks dropped a total of five games to the Golden Flyers as the No. 1 team of junior
Maggie Federhofer (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran North) and freshman
Erin Brezovar (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) won 8-2, while the No. 3 team of freshman
Elizabeth Hill (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) and sophomore
Navone Armstrong (St. Louis, Mo./McCluer North) won 8-3.
The only doubles match in which Webster didn't lose a game came at the No. 2 spot as sophomore
Emma Ferguson (Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan) paired with junior
Alyssa Tourville (Belleville, Ill./Kaskaskia College) won 8-0.
Much like doubles, the Gorloks played dominating tennis in singles against Nazareth as Webster won five of the six matches, including Brezovar pickup up a straight set at No. 1 singles as she defeated Brooke Murphy in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2 to improve to 5-4 on the season. Saturday's match was Brezovar's first at No. 1 singles, as she had played the No. 2 singles most of this season.
At the No. 2 spot, the Gorloks normal No. 1 player, freshman
Katarina Serbentas (Iron River, Mich./West Iron County) earned a 6-1, 6-0 over Nazareth's Lauren Carr.
Junior
Liz Gerger (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell Central) won at the No. 4 spot over Caroline Keegan, 7-5, 6-2, while freshman
Lauren Denny (OFallon, Mo./Francis Howell) defeated Elizabeth Delaney in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2.
Webster other singles win came at the No. 6 spot as freshman
Lauren Bodlovic (Missoula, Mont./Loyola Sacred Heart) picked up a 6-4, 6-0 win over Hannah Chesner.
Nazareth's lone point in the match came at the No. 3 singles spot as Marissa Towers needed a third set tiebreaker over Casey to pull out the 2-6, 6-1, 10-6 victory and prevent a clean sweep by the Gorloks.
The Gorloks will continue play in hte 2020 Spring TennisFest on Monday, March 9 as they face Cairn College in a 12 p.m. ET match at Hilton Head High School.
