HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Webster University Women's Tennis evened its record .500 on the season here Tuesday afternoon thanks to earning a dominant 9-0 victory over Cairn University at Hilton Head High School.
With the win, Webster moves its record to 5-5 overall on the season, while Cairn fell to 3-4 on the year.
"The women came out on fire in doubles and got the sweep and they then kept up the intensity and dominated in singles picking up wins in all six matches," said Webster head coach
John Black.
Black's team, who has won two straight matches at the Spring TennisFest, opened Tuesday's match by outscoring the Highlanders, 24-6 in doubles as the Gorloks dropped just six games.Â
Perhaps the best doubles match came at the No. 1 spot as freshman
Erin Brezovar (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and junior
Maggie Federhofer (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran North) posted an 8-0 win over Cairn's tandem of Alyssa Peters and Charlotte Allen. With the win, Brezovar and Federhofer improved to 7-3 on the season and the duo has won five straight doubles matches.Â
The Gorloks won the other two doubles matches by scores of 8-4 at No. 2 and 8-2 at No. 3.Â
Meanwhile, in the singles, the Gorloks dropped just a total of 27 games in six singles matches, with the closest match coming at the No. 6 as sophomore
Emma Ferguson (Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan) fell in a third set tiebreaker to Cairn's Sarah Jackson. Jackson won the first set, 6-4, but Ferguson rebounded to win 6-2 in the second set and the tallied a10-7 win.Â
Webster's No. 1 and No. 2 singles players dropped a combined three games as Brezovar won 6-1, 6-1 over Peters at the No. 1 spot, while freshman
Katarina Serbentas (Iron River, Mich./West Iron County) won 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot over Lauren Griffith.Â
With their wins, Brezovar improved to 6-4 in singles on the year and has won four straight singles matches, while Serbentas won her second consecutive match at singles and improved to 5-5 on the year.Â
The Gorloks will continue play in the Spring TennisFest on Wednesday, March 10 as they face Gettysburg College at 12 p.m. ET at the Chaplin Park Tennis Complex.Â
